Study: Amount of plastic waste flowing into oceans could triple in 20 years

China News network, July 25, according to the "Central News Agency" reported that according to a new study published on the 23rd, the amount of plastic waste that flows into the ocean every year and leads to the death of Marine life is feared to reach 3 times after 20 years. Unless governments and enterprises take action to reduce the number of plastic products dramatically, in order to avoid the disaster.

The study, by scientists and industry experts commissioned by the Pew Charitable Trusts and a British company, was published in the US journal Science. According to the study, if no action is taken, the amount of plastic waste entering the oceans each year will increase from the current 11 million tons to 29 million tons in 20 years. By 2040, a total of 600 million tonnes of plastic waste could be floating in the oceans, equivalent to the weight of three million blue whales.

The NGO International Solid Waste Association reportedly pointed out that the consumption of single-use plastic products has soared during the COVID-19 pandemic. Masks and latex gloves are washing up on remote beaches in Asia every day; Landfills around the world are filling up with unprecedented amounts of take-out boxes and online delivery packaging. "Plastic pollution affects everyone," said Winnie, senior manager at Pew Charitable Trusts and co-author of the

study. It's not your problem, it's my problem, it's a country's problem, it's everybody's problem... If we don't do anything, it's going to get worse."

The Pew study suggests a range of solutions, including recycling facilities and expanded trash collection, that could reduce the amount of plastic waste projected to enter the ocean by more than 80 percent.
