Swiss media: Western technology ban on China is not the right response
Geneva, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The Swiss mainstream media Neue Zurich Zeitung published a commentary titled "China is a new science and technology power, We must learn to deal with it", arguing that the Western technology ban on China is not the right way to respond, lacks legal basis and does not conform to the basic concept of free market. The "crude" ban on China's science and technology will not work.
"Made in China" is no longer just for plastic toys. High-tech products originating in China, such as Huawei telecom equipment, BYD electric cars, Tiktok social networking app and e-commerce app Shein, are entering the daily lives of people in developed countries. The US has responded by restricting Huawei's trade, forcing Tiktok to change ownership, lobbying groups demanding a ban on Shein and imposing punitive tariffs on Chinese electric cars. The
commentary argues that Western concerns about the "risks" of Chinese high-tech products are not based on facts, and that a broad ban is legally untenable, unreasonable and discriminatory. Such a ban also runs counter to free market principles. Western companies have been stimulated by the benefits of Chinese competitors, such as Germany's Volkswagen, which opened a huge research and development centre in Hefei, China, to advance its electric car business; Facebook of the United States and others have followed Tiktok's lead with short-video apps. These corporate actions ultimately benefit consumers. If a free market economy relies not on free trade but on protectionism, which stifles innovation, it makes a mockery of the free market economy itself.
