170 students from Hong Kong and Macao visited the South China Sea Bureau of the Ministry of Natural Resources

Recently, the South China Sea Bureau of the Ministry of Natural Resources (hereinafter referred to as the South China Sea Bureau), at the invitation of the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Education, launched a "Blue Home" science popularization activity for 170 primary and secondary school students from Hong Kong and Macao. This activity is an important part of the education exchange activities of Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao in 2024. The Nanhai Bureau will pool the science popularization resources of its affiliated units in Guangzhou, combine Marine, science and technology with cultural exchanges and patriotic education, so as to pass on Marine knowledge to Hong Kong and Macao students, explore Marine science and technology, and cultivate patriotic feelings.

Into the South China Sea Bureau History Exhibition Hall

In the South China Sea Bureau History Exhibition Hall, the staff of the South China Sea Area and Island Center introduced the development of Marine ecology, Marine disaster prevention and reduction, Marine survey, Marine economy, Marine technology and equipment, and other fields with the development of the South China Sea Bureau as a footnote. It told the moving story of generation after generation of Marine natural resources workers who fought for the Marine cause of the motherland. "Today's visit impressed me very much, I learned a lot of advanced Marine science and technology equipment, but also felt the Marine natural resources workers in the sea of the hard work of investigation. So we should take care of the Marine ecology and our blue home." A Hong Kong student preaches.

Learn about Marine disaster prevention and mitigation

In the Comprehensive Command Center of the South China Sea Bureau, the staff of the South China Sea Forecast and disaster Reduction Center gives a lecture on Marine disaster science. Combined with animation demonstration and real cases of Marine disasters, the lecture introduced common Marine disasters such as typhoons, storm surges, catastrophic waves and rip currents. "What should I do when I encounter rip current in a bathing beach?" The students asked the lecturers questions based on their own experiences, and learned various emergency escape skills through interaction.

Under the guidance of the staff, the students went to the Marine Early Warning Center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to learn the production process of Marine early warning and understand how Marine forecast work is carried out; At the same time, they immersed themselves in the process of typhoon landfall by watching the micro-documentary "Wind Chaser".

Macao student said: "Macao is also an ocean city, the ocean is closely related to our lives. The 24-hour continuous observation data and the refined Marine early warning and forecast service give us more security protection in our lives."

Exploring the South China Sea Biological Herbarium

In the South China Sea Biological Herbarium, the staff of the South China Sea Ecology Center led the students to "walk" from the microscopic world to the Marine ecosystem. The Herbarium has exhibition areas for porous animals, echinoderms, shellfish, fish, crustaceans and corals, and displays a variety of typical Marine ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds and kelp fields. "Are all these specimens real? "They are all real." "The students marveled. The small herbarium lets students feel the diversity of Marine life in the South China Sea.

"These are jellyfish samples, there are silver medusa, man-of-war medusa, glow-in-the-dark medusa, red spot boat jellyfish and so on." In the laboratory of the South China Sea Ecology Center, students look at various kinds of plankton through microscopes, and feel the exquisite Marine world up close.

In the environmental monitoring laboratory, the staff led two small classes on heavy metal pollution and biological microplastics, introducing the impact of heavy metal pollution on Marine ecosystems and human health, the sources of plastic waste, and the migration and change of plastics in the environment.

South and Arctic scientific survey, Marine survey research

In the South China Sea Survey Center Marine survey results exhibition hall, the staff introduced the basic situation of the South China Sea survey center, demonstrated the results of the South and Arctic scientific survey for the students through the three-dimensional system, and explained the innovative development process of Marine equipment.

Liang Yixing, president of Macao Youth Nautical Model Association, said: "Through this scientific and technological activity, we are very helpful to cultivate students' feelings of home and country, improve their ability to use their hands and minds, and enhance their friendship."

Through this activity, the students from Hong Kong and Macao have a deep understanding of Marine disaster prevention and reduction, Marine ecological protection and restoration, Marine equipment development and Marine science and technology innovation, and have personally felt the historical achievements in the development of China's Marine cause and the changes in the new era, further enhancing the awareness of the ocean and the feelings of the family and the country.
