Banning takeout? Guangxi universities: multiple measures to ensure students have normal meals

Nanning, Dec. 13 (Chinanews.cn) -- A Guangxi university's ban on takeout and packaged food has caused its canteens to be full, sparking heated debate online. On the 13th, the reporter went to the involved Nanning College and saw that the canteen was in good order during rush hour, and the school said that it had taken a number of measures to ensure students' normal meals.

On December 1, Nanning University implemented the "Notice on Banning Take-out Food on Campus", which pointed out that any take-out food delivery is prohibited on campus, and plastic bags and disposable lunch boxes are prohibited to pack meals, noodles, porridge, noodles, soups and other foods in the cafeteria and other shops.

Later, some netizens posted online that since the ban on packing and takeout was implemented, the canteen of Nanning University has been jammed and the supermarket has been robbed of instant noodles. Some students can't stand the crowds and would rather go hungry.

On the 13th, the reporter came to Nanning University. After entering the campus from the north gate of the university, there are ten student dormitory buildings along the way, of which five are equipped with small shops such as convenience stores and dessert stations on the first floor. To the south of the dormitory building is the student dining hall of the university, which is divided into three floors. The first floor is a brand chain fast food restaurant, the second floor is a general student dining hall and private rooms, and the third floor is a special snack area.

At about 10:30 a.m., the reporter saw in the cafeteria on the second floor that some Windows had been open and hot meals had been served. In the canteen, many students have come to eat.

"The class in the morning has just ended, and now there are fewer people coming to eat. Later, you can go back to the dormitory directly to rest." Wang, a freshman of Nanning University, told reporters that he used to eat breakfast in the canteen first, order takeout in the dormitory at noon, and have dinner depending on the class situation in the afternoon. After the ban on packing and takeout was introduced, they also adjusted their meal times, having brunch at 10:30 p.m. and dinner at 4:30 p.m. "Sometimes they come back to eat noodles when they are hungry at night. The canteen stays open until 23pm, which is more convenient."

Chen Tie, director of Nanning University office, said in an interview with Chinanews that the university's ban on packing and takeout food is mainly aimed at cultivating students' good habits and behaviors. "The canteen is more than 10 meters away from the dormitory building, and less than 200 meters away. Some students would rather stay in the dormitory and order instant noodles rather than go to the canteen to save trouble."

Chen Tie said that in the long run, not only make students develop lazy, bad habits of staying at home, packing disposable lunch boxes, plastic bags, and soup residue, but also seriously affect the dormitory and campus environment. In addition, due to the university's remote location, there are no formal food shops around, and students order takeout from private workshops operated without licenses, which is difficult to ensure food safety.

Chen Tie stressed that the ban on packing is aimed at using plastic bags and disposable lunch boxes to pack food. "It is perfectly OK for students to use ordinary lunch boxes to pack food. Before the new rule was implemented, more than a quarter of the students in the school did a questionnaire survey, and the results showed that most of the students think that the current phenomenon of packing in school is serious and causes environmental pollution."

The reporter visited and found that many students have expressed understanding and support for the new regulations implemented by the school. They believe that since the implementation of the regulations, the campus environment has been improved to a certain extent, and the phenomenon of dormitory has been alleviated, but there are still problems such as long queues in the cafeteria and insufficient convenience.

"Sometimes because things delay the meal point, the cafeteria queue for a long time, will miss the day of take-out. It's not convenient to ban take-out." Said a student surnamed Chen from Gaobo Software School of Nanning University.

In this regard, Chen Tie said that the university has taken multiple measures such as extending the business hours of the ordinary canteen on the second floor, adding the window of the canteen, opening the box to increase students' daily dining seats, and encouraging students to eat at different peak to ensure students' normal meals. "Except on the first day of the regulation's implementation, the canteen was crowded for a short time because it was not able to cope with the peak passenger flow, and the dining order in the canteen has returned to normal."

Reporter saw in the school canteen at noon and evening during the two peak hours of dining, and there was no long queue of students to order food, and the longest waiting time was only about 5 minutes. The three-floor dining hall has about 3,500 seats, which can basically meet the needs of students for mobile dining.

As for the hot online picture of students sitting on the outdoor steps with dinner plates, Chen Tie said that after learning that the day was a cold wave, some students sat there while eating in the sun, at that time there were a lot of empty seats in the canteen, not just because there were no seats on the floor as explained on the Internet.

Chen Tie said that Nanning University will firmly implement the ban on packing and take-out food for a long time, and increase funding to create a beautiful campus environment. The university will also strengthen logistical support and continue to respond to students' reasonable demands to ensure campus safety, harmony and stability, Chen said. "The third dining hall, located to the north of students' dormitories, will also be put into use next spring, which will relieve the pressure of dining halls during peak hours." (Finished)
