Duterte is serious! If Canada refuses to accept the garbage, it will be dumped in Canadian territorial waters
Overseas network May 22, In recent days, the garbage dispute between the Philippines and Canada has been delayed. From the Philippines to Canada issued an ultimatum time has passed a week, Canada has been verbally committed, has not seen actual action. The move completely angered Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who ordered government agencies to take action on the issue.
According to the Philippine Star reported on the 22nd, Philippine presidential spokesman SalvadorPanelo said that President Duterte has issued instructions to the relevant authorities to find a private shipping company to ship the garbage back to North America. "The Philippine government will bear all the costs, we don't mind", he said, without naming the specific enforcement agency. Mr Panelo stressed that Mr Duterte's position on the issue was "principled and uncompromising" and that "if Canada does not accept the garbage, we will dump it in Canadian territorial waters or within 12 nautical miles of the country's sea base line".
Panelo said at a news conference on the 21st that "the Canadian government has issued a statement saying that it has assigned a shipping company to deal with the matter". However, Panelo again said that the Canadian statement had become "irrelevant" and that there had been no word from Ottawa after the May 15 deadline was missed. The Philippine presidency said containers of waste left in the Philippines had not been removed and that Mr Duterte was "concerned" by Canada's "excessive delay".
Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary TeodoroLocsinJr. announced the recall of its senior diplomats in Canada on Monday, stressing that "if Canada does not remove all the garbage containers left in the Philippines, the Philippines will recall more diplomatic officials from Canada."
The Philippines and Canada have a long history of garbage disputes. In 2018, a court in Manila ordered a private Canadian importer to take back 69 containers of toxic waste shipped to the Philippines in 2013 and 2014, including adult diapers, used newspapers, plastic bottles and plastic bags.
Just last month, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to "declare war on Canada" over the issue, and issued an "ultimatum" to Canada to remove the "remaining waste" by May 15. Philippine presidential spokesman Panelo even threatened that if Canada continued to ignore Duterte's request, it would not hesitate to cut off diplomatic relations with Canada.
Although Canada has said under pressure to remove these garbage containers, it also said that it would "pay out of its own pocket" to cover the costs of cleaning and transportation, and the event is not going well, looking at the May 15 deadline has passed a week, Canada and the Philippines garbage dispute is still continuing.
