According to reports, Hong Kong's Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, said that single-use plastic cutlery accounted for an average of 2% of the daily waste volume at landfills and 10% of the waste plastic, so it was necessary to reduce waste and remove plastic, and the SAR Government would also implement this in its premises from 2019, requiring restaurant operators to avoid using single-use cutlery when tendering for new contracts and renewal. It will also study the feasibility and mechanism of controlling or banning single-use plastic tableware.
Representatives from a number of trade associations of the catering industry, enterprises and environmental groups attended the launch ceremony held on the 15th to support the campaign and hope that all sectors of society can jointly realize the vision of "plastic-free ocean".
In his speech at the event, Mr Wong said that the SAR Government attaches great importance to the environmental impact of plastic waste and is committed to encouraging the public to reduce the use of single-use plastic tableware through various activities to promote waste reduction at source.
Following the launch of the "Plastic Tableware on the Beach First" campaign at public beaches and nearby eateries in mid-2018, the EPD, in collaboration with the Environmental Movement, the catering industry and three large fast-food chains, launched the "Plastic tableware First for Takeaway" campaign to encourage all sectors to support the provision of reusable tableware, and "plastic, disposable" to reduce the production of single-use plastic waste.
He pointed out that in order to successfully implement the campaign, the support of the catering industry is indispensable, and I believe that the three large chain fast food restaurants taking the lead in participating in the campaign can play a leading role in encouraging more catering industry and other stakeholders to join the campaign, and enhance the public's awareness of plastic walking and promote the whole people to reduce waste.
To tie in with the United Nations' theme of this year's World Environment Day, the CWG is launching a series of "Go Plastic, Go Plastic" activities, including organizing the "Zero Go Plastic" Award and online game, and will launch the "Reusable Tableware Loan Scheme" in mid-December to provide free reusable tableware to major event organizers.
