SABIC launches material solutions for 5G communications infrastructure and mobile devices
At the 3rd 5G Terminal Processing Industry Chain Exhibition (CPME2020) held in Dongguan, China in 2020, For the first time, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has launched a portfolio of high-performance materials designed for 5G base stations, terminals and mobile devices. In addition, SABIC technical experts also conducted nine product demonstrations at the exhibition, highlighting the introduction of LNP™ Modified materials and copolymers, ULTEM™ Resins and Nortel & Trade; And a variety of specialty materials including resins and oligomers. These solutions are designed to address major industry challenges such as thermal management and RF performance, resulting in advantages such as lightweight, cost reduction and increased productivity.
Specialty materials improve 5G design and performance SABIC's LNP modifiers and copolymers enable engineers to improve the design and performance of active antenna units, resulting in customized dielectric constant (Dk) and loss factor (Df) values, as well as superior weather resistance.
Another theme product SABIC will highlight at the 5G Terminal Processing Industry Chain exhibition is NORYL resin (modified polyphenylene ether). The resin has a very low specific gravity and offers bromine-free and chlorine-free flame resistance, hydrolytic stability, dimensional stability, acid and alkaline resistance and excellent dielectric properties. NORYL resin has been successfully used in a number of 5G communication applications including full-frequency GPS antennas, microwave antenna reflectors, cooling fans in baseband processing units (BBUS), and mmwave radar radomes. SABIC demonstrated a full range of such applications at this exhibition. In addition, SABIC's highly heat-resistant ULTEM resins also have unique performance characteristics: excellent dimensional stability, infrared transmittance, low dielectric constant (Dk) and dielectric loss (Df), stability over a wide temperature range, and good metallization.
The main applications of this polyetherimide (PEI) resin in 5G components include fiber optic connectors and optical module lenses, RF connectors, and RF filter components. The newly introduced high heat resistance and low thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) products are suitable for the assembly process of surface mount technology (SMT) to help improve production efficiency and can be used in the production of connectors and cavity RF filters.
With NORYL oligomers, developers can prepare high-speed copper clad plates, enabling multi-layer printed circuit board designs with ultra-low insertion losses. SABIC's dianhydride specialty resin monomers offer unique properties to manufacturers of polyimide films, such as improved dielectric properties and copper foil bonding strength.
