Indian police announce arrest of main suspect in Mumbai fake liquor case
China News Service, Beijing, June 24, New Delhi: Indian police announced the arrest of Mumbai counterfeit alcohol suspects on the 24th local time. Police said the man is suspected of smuggling and selling fake alcohol, resulting in more than 100 deaths in Mumbai.
Mansour Latif Sheikh, 26, was arrested at his hideout northwest of New Delhi on Tuesday. In a statement, Delhi Deputy Inspector General of Police Vinu Bansal said Shaikh admitted during interrogation that he diluted three barrels of "fake liquor" and packed them in small plastic bags before transporting them to the western city. The statement added that Sheikh had been producing and selling fake alcohol "for three years, following in his father's footsteps."
According to Agence France-Presse, Shaikh is the main suspect in the case, while seven other people in Mumbai have been arrested in connection with the crime. The BBC reported that the suspects had obtained the ingredients from Ahmedabad in Gujarat state. Mr Shaikh fled Mumbai and took refuge in a friend's house in New Delhi after the poisoning deaths of people who drank the fake alcohol.
So far, 102 people have died in Mumbai after drinking fake alcohol and 40 others have been hospitalized for poisoning, the BBC reported. Police suspect formaldehyde poisoning was the cause of death, but are still waiting for test results. Sales of moonshine are huge in India, where a 250ml bottle often costs less than a dollar, AFP reported.
Deaths caused by fake alcohol are not uncommon in India. In January, at least 29 people died in Uttar Pradesh after drinking fake alcohol; About 170 people died in West Bengal in 2011 after drinking fake alcohol; In Gujarat, more than 100 people died from fake alcohol in 2009. Agence France-Presse pointed out in the report that in the past, deaths from fake alcohol have occurred in poor rural areas and are still rare in large cities such as Mumbai. (Finished)
