Inspection and quarantine departments remind children to avoid these "pitfalls" when choosing children's toys

China National Radio Ningbo May 31st News (Reporter Du Jinming Correspondent Yang Xiaxiaojia De'an Meng Yuefeng Wang Mingxian) "June 1" Children's Day is approaching, and children's toys in the market and online stores are starting to sell well. Faced with a dazzling array of toys with various styles, are parents a little dazzled? Ningbo Inspection and Quarantine Bureau specially reminds parents that while paying attention to whether the toys are novel and fun, they must not forget safety first.

The reporter learned from the Ningbo Inspection and Quarantine Bureau that the EU has always had a strong control over children's toys, because children's toy products involve many factors such as safety, environmental protection, and health, which are directly related to children's life and health. From January to April this year, the EU Rapid Alert System for Non-Food Consumer Products (abbreviated as RAPEX System) issued a total of 347 non-conforming notifications to Chinese products. Among them, children's products were notified the most, with a total of 178 items, accounting for 51.3%, firmly occupying the top spot in the notification list. Among the reasons reported, suffocation ranked first, with a total of 116 items, accounting for 33.4%; followed by chemical hazards, with a total of 98 items, accounting for 28.2%; and third was injuries, including injuries, burns, scalds, cuts, etc., with 80 items, accounting for 23.1%. Among them, the main sources of suffocation injuries are small parts produced after biting objects that may be swallowed, clothes ropes entangled, and some non-children's products that may be touched and swallowed by children.

Misunderstanding 1: Newly bought toys are clean and can be safely given to babies to play with

Parents generally do not ignore the need to clean and disinfect toys that are often played with, but it is different for newly bought toys. Many people may think that newly bought toys that look clean will definitely not have any problems, and cleaning is a superfluous thing. However, new toys placed in shopping malls are also easily infected with bacteria, especially those toys without outer packaging. Customers who come to choose them touch and pinch them, which are actually very dirty. Therefore, just after you bring home the toys, you need to clean and disinfect them before you can let your baby play with them, just like the toys you often play with.

Myth 2: The stuffing of plush toys is wrapped inside and cannot be touched, so it doesn¡¯t matter whether it is good or bad

Although the stuffing of plush toys is wrapped inside and cannot be directly touched by the baby, some plush toys filled with black cotton contain harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, which will evaporate and cause harm to the baby¡¯s health, such as causing the baby to cry and develop erythema. In severe cases, it can also induce skin diseases or other infectious diseases. Some black cotton also contains germs, which can easily cause the baby to be infected with diseases. Therefore, when buying plush toys, you must not be greedy for cheapness, but go to regular shopping malls to buy toys filled with safe stuffing.

Myth 3: As long as the color of colored toys does not fall off, they will not harm the baby

Many colored toys are very beautiful, such as some painted colored building blocks, plastic toys, colored balloons with beautiful patterns, etc., which are all toys that babies love very much. Although you can't see the color falling off when you hold these toys in your hands and touch them, these brightly colored toys may be painted, and these paints may contain lead. If babies often play with such toys and don't wash their hands after playing, it is easy to cause lead poisoning. Therefore, when playing with such brightly colored toys, you must pay attention to washing your baby's hands after playing with the toys or before the baby eats.

Myth 4: Sturdy toys are not easy to break, so you can let your baby play with them at will

Sturdy toys will not break, cut your baby, or let your baby put some broken pieces into their mouths, but some toys with hard surfaces, such as metal guns, airplanes, rockets, etc., may also scratch your baby's skin or pierce your baby's hands and feet. You must pay attention when playing with them, and it is best to have an adult watch over them.

Myth 5: Electric toys are very attractive to babies, and you can let your baby play with them with or without electricity

The batteries of electric toys need to be replaced regularly, otherwise the chemicals inside will affect the baby's health. Some electric toys with transmission mechanisms such as gears and belts, if the baby accidentally pulls out the small accessories inside, it may be stuffed into the mouth, causing suffocation and other dangerous situations. It is also possible to insert the little finger when the switch is on and get injured. Therefore, when buying electric toys, you must observe whether these parts are covered to prevent the baby from touching them and causing danger.

Misunderstanding 6: Toys with sound can effectively stimulate the baby's hearing. It doesn't matter if you play more

Toys that can make sounds are indeed very attractive to babies, and they are also good for the development of their hearing. However, when choosing such toys, you must pay attention to the sound should not be too loud, the sound quality should be relatively harmonious, and the playing time should be properly controlled, otherwise it will affect the baby's hearing and harm health.

How to prevent "pitfalls" when choosing children's toys

The material should be safe. It is best to choose natural materials with SP safety marks. For example, when choosing plush toys, you need to pay special attention to the material. The fine fibers attached to the surface of inferior products can cause asthma and may cause pneumonia. For metal toys, you should check the labels carefully to see if they contain excessive amounts of heavy metals. If children accidentally eat them, they may be poisoned by heavy metals and their brain development may be affected.

The structure should also be safe, and avoid small accessories and sharp edges that are easy to fall off. For some toys with parts, children under 3 years old may easily swallow the parts, causing suffocation. Some hard toys have rough surfaces or sharp edges, which can easily scratch the skin and cause infection. Some toys with round hole designs or moving parts may pinch children's fingers while playing. When purchasing some sound-making toys, be careful not to choose harsh sounds, as these noises may hurt children's eardrums.

Also pay attention to check the outer packaging of the toys. If the toys you purchase have plastic packaging bags or packaging, they should be destroyed and discarded immediately after unpacking to prevent children from suffocating due to improper use of plastic bags.
