Japan records current account surplus for 13th consecutive month
Tokyo, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Japan posted a current account surplus of 2.64 trillion yen (US $1 about 151.78 yen) in February, the 13th consecutive month of surplus, as the trade deficit narrowed and the travel balance surplus increased, a preliminary balance of payments statistics report released by the Ministry of Finance showed on April 8.
Data showed that Japan's goods trade deficit in February was 280.9 billion yen, a significant decline from the same period last year. Among them, exports rose 5.5 percent year-on-year to 8.10 trillion yen, driven by an increase in exports of automobiles, auto parts and plastics; Imports rose 1.4 percent to 8.38 trillion yen, driven by higher imports of clothing, computer equipment and petroleum products.
In terms of trade in services, the number of foreign tourists to Japan rose sharply year-on-year, narrowing the service trade deficit to 55.6 billion yen.
In addition, the increase in overseas portfolio investment income led to a surplus of 3.31 trillion yen in overseas investment income, including interest and dividends.
