Myanmar is hit by floods and asks for help from the international community

On August 1, 2015 local time, Kalay, Sagaing province, Myanmar, was hit by floods, and people's travel was blocked.

China news network on August 6, according to foreign media reports on the 6th, after the Myanmar government issued an appeal for help to the international community, the United States, Australia, China and Japan and other countries have provided assistance to assist in the biggest flood relief in Myanmar in 40 years.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said on the 5th that the United States will announce an aid package in the near future, and the US Embassy in Yangon is coordinating with Myanmar officials to confirm what kind of assistance should be provided.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced that the government would provide an aid package to Myanmar, including $2 million to help with relief efforts.

The Chinese Embassy in Rangoon began distributing relief supplies this week. Chinese Ambassador Hong Liang led the embassy staff to the hard-hit Sagaing province and Rakhine State to donate relief supplies to the victims. He also called on Chinese enterprises and institutions in Myanmar to actively participate in the relief efforts and vigorously collect donations and supplies. Meanwhile, the first batch of 10 members of China's Blue Sky Rescue Team arrived in Myanmar the day before yesterday, the first international rescue team to arrive in the country. On May 5, the team went to Magwe Province, the hardest hit area, to carry out humanitarian relief operations.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency said it would respond to the Myanmar government's appeal to provide blankets, mattresses and plastic sheets for the victims.

Parts of Myanmar have been hit by heavy rains since mid-July, with 12 of the country's 14 provinces and states hit by heavy rains and floods of varying degrees. According to the statistics of Myanmar's Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, up to 250,000 people have been affected so far, and 69 people have lost their lives.

Rescue workers have so far been unable to reach some of the worst-hit and remote areas. The government has taken precautionary measures for areas that have not been cut off, such as flood warnings for residents in the Irrawaddy Delta region in the southwest. Authorities estimate that water from the north will flow south, pushing water levels in the Irrawaddy Delta region to dangerous levels.
