New injection-grade additives can help produce highly waterproof plastics
NBD Nanotechnologies(Boston, Massachusetts, USA) recently introduced an injection-grade additive that makes plastic surfaces highly waterproof, dustproof, dirt and mud resistant, and ice resistant. The additive is the first product in the company's upcoming RepelShell series. Initial applications include waterproof and stain-resistant sports shoes, electronics, self-cleaning nonwovens and stain-resistant textiles. Industrial plastics used in the energy, automotive, construction, manufacturing and technology sectors could also benefit from the material.
Its formula is composed of functional molecules that are mixed into additives during the plastic compounding process and has been patented. The mixed molecules of NBD contain both organic and inorganic elements, which meet the required structural and thermal properties.
" Nano RepelShell of NBD is added directly to plastics through an injection-grade solution that guarantees thermal stability and high surface properties," Deckard Sorensen, President of NBD Nano, said, "Imagine a professional soccer team playing on a super muddy field, and if they use RepelShell on the bottom of their sneakers, they won't be bothered by mud at all."
NBD adds a nano-structured chemical powder to the plastic to achieve water resistance and oil repellent properties. The resulting plastic has the original mechanical properties, but the surface is also extremely water - and oil-resistant. The only requirement for this additive to be applied is a low load bearing, making it a very cost effective solution overall.
