Philippine government: The declaration of war is a metaphor, but the anger is real

Overseas network April 30, Philippine President Duterte recently issued a warning to Canada because of the "garbage dispute", asking Canada to smuggle the garbage to the Philippines back to their own country, or else "declare war" to Canada. The Philippine presidential Office responded to Duterte's "declaration of war" speech on the 29th.

According to the Philippines abs-cbn news network, Philippine presidential spokesman SalvadorPanelo responded at a press conference on Monday (29) that the declaration of war was only a metaphor and Duterte was "expressing anger". Although the Philippines will not go to war with Canada, Duterte offered to let the Canadian side take away the garbage containers, and the warning was serious.

"It's a way of expressing strong anger." He added, "I don't think any country wants to start another world war where everyone goes to ruin."

In 2018, a court in Manila ordered a private Canadian importer to take back 50 containers of toxic waste shipped to the Philippines in 2013 and 2014, including adult diapers, used newspapers, plastic bottles and plastic bags. Canada refused to send the waste back to the Philippines on the grounds that "the government does not have the authority to require private transporters to bring the waste back to the country."

The "garbage dispute" between the Philippines and Canada has completely angered Duterte, he said on the 23rd, if the Canadian side does not respond to the demands of the Philippines, he will declare war on Canada. Perhaps feeling Duterte's anger, the Canadian side "gave in". On the 24th, the Canadian Embassy in the Philippines responded urgently, saying, "Canada is committed to working with the Philippine government to resolve the garbage issue, comply with the court ruling, and ship the garbage back to Canada."
