Seattle bans single-use plastics from food vendors

People's Daily News According to the NHK website, as people are increasingly concerned about the pollution caused by plastic waste in the ocean, the US city of Seattle has banned food suppliers from using disposable plastic straws and tableware from July 1, violators will be fined 250 dollars.

Local restaurants are starting to offer paper straws, and Seattle-based Starbucks and McDonald's, the leading hamburger chain in the United States, have begun offering plant-based compostable straws. Local citizens think it's good to have environmental concerns in mind.

The United States is particularly concerned about the environmental impact of plastic straws because they are too small to be recycled. Harrah, chairman of the Seattle Public Utilities Commission, said that the world's oceans are facing a serious crisis of plastic pollution, and that "Seattle is proud to be a pioneer and set an example for other cities in the United States to ban plastic straws."

The city of Malibu, California, has banned plastic straws altogether, and similar measures have been proposed by the city councils of San Francisco and New York City.

Although food suppliers are banned from providing plastic cutlery and straws, consumers can still find them in supermarkets and retail outlets across Seattle. (Wen Qing)
