According to Yonhap news agency, South Korea's Ministry of Environment said on the 16th, in view of the national concern about the radiation of imported waste, will strengthen the environmental safety management of large imports of waste items, including strengthen the inspection of radioactive substances and heavy metals imported from Japan waste batteries, waste tires and waste plastics.
It is understood that in 2018, South Korea imported 71,000 tons of waste batteries, 7,000 tons of waste tires and 66,000 tons of waste plastics from Japan.

South Korea's Ministry of Environment pointed out that in 2018, the import of reusable waste was 2.54 million tons, up to 15 times the export volume, and the import of waste has been increasing, which has become a problem to be solved.
From the quantity point of view, in the reusable waste imported by South Korea in 2018, fly ash reached 1.27 million tons, accounting for the largest proportion, followed by 470,000 tons of waste batteries, 240,000 tons of waste tires and 170,000 tons of waste plastics.

From the perspective of items, South Korea imported 143,000 tons of waste batteries from the United States in 2018, 71,000 tons from Japan and 69,000 tons from the United Arab Emirates; South Korea imported 106,000 tons of waste tires from Australia, 72,000 tons from the United States, 48,000 tons from Italy and 7,000 tons from Japan; 66,000 tons of waste plastics were imported from Japan and 36,000 tons from the United States. Fly ash imports all come from Japan.
Reported that the South Korean Ministry of Environment plans to change the authenticity check of the reusable waste radioactive substances (Cs-134, Cs-137, I-131) and heavy metal composition analysis table, and the on-site inspection of import companies from quarterly to monthly inspection.
