Statistics Bureau: China's GDP in 2016 was 74412.7 billion yuan
This morning (28th), the National Bureau of Statistics released the 2016 National Economic and Social Development Statistical Bulletin on its official website. The data in the bulletin show that according to preliminary calculations, China's GDP for the whole year[2] was 74,412.7 billion yuan, an increase of 6.7% over the previous year. Among them, the added value of the primary industry was 63,671 billion yuan, an increase of 3.3%; the added value of the secondary industry was 29,623.6 billion yuan, an increase of 6.1%; and the added value of the tertiary industry was 38,422.1 billion yuan, an increase of 7.8%. The added value of the primary industry accounted for 8.6% of China's GDP, the added value of the secondary industry accounted for 39.8%, and the added value of the tertiary industry accounted for 51.6%, an increase of 1.4 percentage points over the previous year. China's per capita GDP for the whole year was 53,980 yuan, an increase of 6.1% over the previous year. In 2016, faced with a complex and ever-changing international environment and China's heavy and arduous tasks of reform, development and stability, under the strong leadership of the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core, all regions and departments fully implemented the spirit of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Plenary Sessions of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, conscientiously implemented the decisions and arrangements of the Party Central Committee and the State Council, coordinated the promotion of the "five-in-one" overall layout and the coordinated promotion of the "four comprehensive" strategic layout, adhered to the general tone of work of seeking progress while maintaining stability, adhered to the new development concept, took the promotion of supply-side structural reform as the main line, appropriately expanded total demand, firmly promoted reform, properly responded to risks and challenges, guided the formation of good social expectations, maintained stable and healthy economic and social development, and achieved a good start to the "13th Five-Year Plan".
I. General
According to preliminary calculations, China's GDP[2] for the whole year was 74,412.7 billion yuan, an increase of 6.7% over the previous year. Among them, the added value of the primary industry was 6,367.1 billion yuan, an increase of 3.3%; the added value of the secondary industry was 29,623.6 billion yuan, an increase of 6.1%; and the added value of the tertiary industry was 38,422.1 billion yuan, an increase of 7.8%. The added value of the primary industry accounted for 8.6% of China's GDP, the added value of the secondary industry accounted for 39.8%, and the added value of the tertiary industry accounted for 51.6%, an increase of 1.4 percentage points over the previous year. China's per capita GDP for the whole year was 53,980 yuan, an increase of 6.1% over the previous year. The total national income[3] for the whole year was 74,235.2 billion yuan, an increase of 6.9% over the previous year.
At the end of the year, the total population of mainland China was 1,382.71 million, an increase of 8.09 million from the end of the previous year. Among them, the permanent urban population was 792.98 million, accounting for 57.35% of the total population (urbanization rate of permanent population), an increase of 1.25 percentage points from the end of the previous year. The urbanization rate of registered population was 41.2%, an increase of 1.3 percentage points from the end of the previous year. The number of births in the whole year was 17.86 million, with a birth rate of 12.95%; the number of deaths was 9.77 million, with a death rate of 7.09%; and the natural growth rate was 5.86%. The number of Chinese people with different household registrations[4] was 292 million, of which 245 million were floating population[5].

At the end of the year, there were 776.03 million employed people in China, of which 414.28 million were employed in urban areas. 13.14 million new urban jobs were created throughout the year. The registered urban unemployment rate was 4.02% at the end of the year. The total number of migrant workers[7] in China was 281.71 million, up 1.5% year-on-year. Among them, 169.34 million migrant workers went abroad, up 0.3%; and 112.37 million local migrant workers went to work, up 3.4%.
The annual labor productivity[8] was 94,825 yuan per person, up 6.4% year-on-year.
The annual consumer price index rose 2.0% year-on-year. The ex-factory producer price index for industrial products fell 1.4%. The purchase price index for industrial producers fell 2.0%. The price of fixed asset investment fell 0.6%. The producer price index of agricultural products[9] rose 3.4%.

In December, the number of cities with a year-on-year increase in the sales price of newly built commercial housing in 70 large and medium-sized cities was 65, and the number of cities with a decrease was 5; the number of cities with a month-on-month increase was 46, 19 fewer than the peak of the year, the number of cities with no change was 4, and the number of cities with a decrease was 20.
China's general public budget revenue for the whole year was 15,955.2 billion yuan, an increase of 682.8 billion yuan or 4.5% over the same period last year[11]. Among them, tax revenue was 13,035.4 billion yuan, an increase of 543.2 billion yuan or 4.3%.
Note: The data from 2012 to 2015 in the figure are the final figures of China's general public budget revenue, and the data for 2016 are the actual figures.
At the end of the year, the country's foreign exchange reserves were US$3,010.5 billion, a decrease of US$319.8 billion from the end of the previous year. The average exchange rate of RMB for the whole year was 1 US dollar to 6.6423 yuan, a depreciation of 6.2% over the previous year.
II. Agriculture
The annual grain planting area was 113.03 million hectares, a decrease of 310,000 hectares over the previous year. Among them, the wheat planting area was 24.19 million hectares, an increase of 50,000 hectares; the rice planting area was 30.16 million hectares, a decrease of 50,000 hectares; the corn planting area was 36.76 million hectares, a decrease of 1.36 million hectares. The cotton planting area was 3.38 million hectares, a decrease of 420,000 hectares. The oilseed planting area was 14.12 million hectares, an increase of 80,000 hectares. The sugar planting area was 1.68 million hectares, a decrease of 60,000 hectares.
The annual grain output was 616.24 million tons, a decrease of 5.2 million tons over the previous year, a decrease of 0.8%. Among them, summer grain output was 139.2 million tons, a decrease of 1.2%; early rice output was 32.78 million tons, a decrease of 2.7%; autumn grain output was 444.26 million tons, a decrease of 0.6%. The annual grain output was 565.17 million tons, a decrease of 1.2% over the previous year. Among them, rice output was 206.93 million tons, a decrease of 0.6%; wheat output was 128.85 million tons, a decrease of 1.0%; corn output was 219.55 million tons, a decrease of 2.3%.
The annual cotton output was 5.34 million tons, a decrease of 4.6% over the previous year. Oil output was 36.13 million tons, an increase of 2.2%. Sugar output was 122.99 million tons, a decrease of 1.6%. Tea output was 2.41 million tons, an increase of 7.4%.
The total meat output was 85.40 million tons, a decrease of 1.0% over the previous year. Among them, pork production was 52.99 million tons, down 3.4%; beef production was 7.17 million tons, up 2.4%; mutton production was 4.59 million tons, up 4.2%; poultry production was 18.88 million tons, up 3.4%. Poultry egg production was 30.95 million tons, up 3.2%. Milk production was 36.02 million tons, down 4.1%. At the end of the year, the number of live pigs on hand was 435.04 million, down 3.6%; the number of live pigs slaughtered was 685.02 million, down 3.3%.
The annual output of aquatic products was 69 million tons, up 3.0% over the previous year. Among them, the output of farmed aquatic products was 51.56 million tons, up 4.4%; the output of captured aquatic products was 17.44 million tons, down 1.0%.
The annual output of timber was 66.83 million cubic meters, down 7.0% over the previous year.
The newly added irrigated area of cultivated land was 1.18 million hectares, and the newly added water-saving irrigation area was 2.11 million hectares.
III. Industry and Construction
The total industrial added value for the whole year was 24,786.0 billion yuan, an increase of 6.0% over the previous year. The added value of industries above designated size increased by 6.0%. Among industries above designated size, by economic type, state-controlled enterprises increased by 2.0%; collective enterprises decreased by 1.3%; joint-stock enterprises increased by 6.9%; foreign-invested enterprises and enterprises invested by Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan increased by 4.5%; and private enterprises increased by 7.5%. By category, mining decreased by 1.0%, manufacturing increased by 6.8%, and electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply industries increased by 5.5%.
In the whole year, among the industries above designated size, the added value of agricultural and sideline food processing industry increased by 6.1% over the previous year, the textile industry increased by 5.5%, the chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing industry increased by 7.7%, the non-metallic mineral products industry increased by 6.5%, the ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry decreased by 1.7%, the general equipment manufacturing industry increased by 5.9%, the special equipment manufacturing industry increased by 6.7%, the automobile manufacturing industry increased by 15.5%, the electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing industry increased by 8.5%, the computer, communication and other electronic equipment manufacturing industry increased by 10.0%, and the electricity, heat production and supply industry increased by 4.8%. The added value of strategic emerging industries[12] increased by 10.5%. The added value of high-tech manufacturing[13] increased by 10.8%, accounting for 12.4% of the added value of industries above designated size. The added value of equipment manufacturing[14] increased by 9.5%, accounting for 32.9% of the added value of industries above designated size. The added value of the six high energy-consuming industries[15] increased by 5.2%, accounting for 28.1% of the added value of industries above designated size.
