U.S. parties renew dispute over safety flaws of 3D-printed guns

According to the British "Guardian" reported on December 10, the US Democratic Party proposed to push for amendments to the gun bill recently, aiming at controlling 3D printed guns, which was opposed by the Republican Party. On the issue of 3D printed guns, the two parties have caused a new round of dispute over gun control.
Existing U.S. law requires all plastic weapons in the United States to contain metal parts that can be easily identified by security monitors. The 1980s law is set to expire on December 9, but the US Senate and House of Representatives have reached an agreement to extend it.
Democratic senators, led by ChuckSchumer, are reportedly pushing for an amendment to the law that would close current loopholes. They claim that the fact that plastic guns can now be printed at home via 3D printers poses a growing social risk. The amendment outlawed the detachable metal studs in 3D-printed handguns, which allow them to evade security checks at airports and other sensitive areas. In addition, the amendment would require all plastic guns to contain non-detachable metal parts.
However, the amendment was opposed by Republican Congressman Chuck Grassley, who said the risks of 3D printing technology need to be tested over time. Some Democrats see it as an example of Republicans' unwillingness to accept any gun reform. Chuck Schumer said he still hoped Republicans could put aside "personal feelings" between the parties and reconsider the amendment later. Republicans have opposed most gun control measures in recent years.
