Waste-producing country? Report says US produces large amounts of waste, but recycling rate is only 35%

Beijing, July 5, a comprehensive report, a global waste trend research report pointed out that the United States population accounts for about 4% of the world's total population, but the annual production of waste accounts for about 12% of the world's total, much higher than other countries. On the other hand, the United States waste recycling rate of only 35%, in the developed countries in the worst ranks.

Global statistics on solids, plastics, food waste and hazardous waste show that the world generates an average of 2.1 billion tons of waste a year, enough to fill 820,000 Olympic swimming pools. Of this, only 16 per cent, or 323 million tonnes, is recycled, while 950 million tonnes is disposed of in "unsustainable ways", according to VeriskMaplecroft, a risk analyst.

analysis shows that the United States produces about 239 million tons of municipal solid waste each year, accounting for 12 percent of the world's total. Its per capita waste production is more than three times the global average and more than seven times that of Ethiopia, the country with the least waste.

Moreover, the United States consumes a disproportionate amount of its waste recycling capacity. With a recycling rate of 35 percent, the United States ranks among the worst in the developed world, lagging badly behind countries like Germany, which recyles 68 percent of its waste.

The United States is the only developed country that generates more waste than it can recycle, due to a lack of political will and infrastructure investment, the report said.

Plastic waste is particularly polluting, with an estimated 100 million tonnes now found in the oceans, threatening Marine life and tourism. While some countries have vowed to cut their use of single-use plastic, a monitor noted last month that global production is still rising.
