On the evening of July 8, 30-year-old Wu Jiantong was electrocuted while charging his iPhone 4. Although he temporarily saved his life, he is still in a coma. This is another vicious accident caused by charging a mobile phone, following the death of a Southern Airlines stewardess who was electrocuted while using a charging iPhone 5 to make a call. Yesterday, the reporter met Wu Jiantong in the ICU of Haidian Hospital.

Electrocuted while charging

According to Wu Jiantong's sister Wu Jianxiang, at around 10 p.m. on July 8, her brother Wu Jiantong found that his iPhone 4 was out of power, so he connected the phone to the charger to charge it. "I had my back to my brother at the time, and suddenly I heard him shout "It's connected." "When Wu Jianxiang turned around, she saw Wu Jiantong had fallen to the ground and began to convulse. Without thinking too much, Wu Jianxiang hurriedly unplugged the charger connected to the power strip. "At that time, I felt a needle-like pain in my fingers, as if an electric current flowed from the fingertips along the arms and half of the body to the toes." At this time, Wu Jiantong had lost consciousness. His lips were purple, his mouth was foaming, and his whole body was twitching.

The family hurriedly called the police and the 120 ambulance arrived soon. The family recalled that after the emergency personnel arrived, they found that Wu Jiantong had ventricular fibrillation, which is commonly known as cardiac arrest. The consequence of this was that Wu Jiantong had no breathing and no blood pressure. The emergency personnel immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Wu Jiantong, gave him medicine, and used instruments to help him breathe.

It was an obvious electric shock

Afterwards, the ambulance sent Wu Jiantong to Haidian Hospital for rescue. According to Dr. Yan, the attending physician, when Wu Jiantong was first sent to the hospital, his condition was very bad. He had no spontaneous breathing. Although his heartbeat had recovered, it was only 160 beats per minute. Because of the long period of hypoxia, the lactic acid in his body was high and his brain was seriously damaged. "After the diagnosis of the experts, this was an obvious electric shock injury." For this reason, the hospital invited an expert in electric shock first aid to diagnose Wu Jiantong's condition. After three days of rescue, Wu Jiantong's various indicators were relatively stable, and he relied on fewer and fewer machines. On July 15, Wu Jiantong resumed spontaneous breathing. But the only unsatisfactory thing was that his brain had not yet recovered and he was still in a coma. The hospital arranged hyperbaric oxygen therapy for Wu Jiantong to help his brain recover.

Is the power strip leaking electricity?

Family members said that it was raining on the night of the incident and the indoor air was humid. When the air is humid, the insulation performance of electrical equipment and lines will decrease, making it easy to get an electric shock.

Is the counterfeit charger conductive?

The mobile phone charger used by Wu Jiantong was not produced by the original manufacturer, but a 2 cm square charger with a rough appearance. Wu Jianxiang said that because the original charger was lost, this was later configured by his brother. The reporter noticed that the appearance of this charger was similar to that of the iPhone 5 charger, but the instructions on it were all in English, and the USB connection was not tightly plugged in, with the exposed metal connector being 3 mm long.

Tang Fanwei, an engineer at an Apple authorized accessory manufacturer, said that when a mobile phone is charging, a mobile phone charger in normal operation will reduce the voltage of 220V to about 5V. This voltage is far lower than the 36V that the human body can withstand, so even if the phone shell leaks electricity, it will not cause electric shock to death. However, if an unqualified copycat charger is used, the circuit safety protection is prone to problems, or the charger circuit is aging, the metal wire ends are protruding, etc., the charger in the charging process may indeed transmit the 220V voltage directly to the mobile phone, causing the human body to be electrocuted.

The cause of the electric shock is very strange

Engineer Feng Jianmin said that according to the description of Wu Jiantong's family, the probability of electric shock caused by inferior chargers is very low. "Because the charger is wrapped with a layer of engineering plastic shell, it is a very good insulator." Engineer Feng said that if you want to directly apply 220-volt alternating current to the human body, you must form a current loop, but this is almost impossible, because in this case, the mobile phone will also be damaged due to excessive instantaneous voltage, but the reporter saw that Wu Jiantong's mobile phone can be used normally. Engineer Feng believes that only when the voltage intensity reaches 3 kilovolts can the capacitor in the charger be broken down.
