Australian police seize 1.1 tons of cocaine
Beijing, Nov. 14 (China News Service) Canberra: Australian police seized 1.1 tons of cocaine from two containers that arrived at Sydney's Bottani port last week, the Australian government said on Friday. Australian Border Force officers seized two containers last week and found each containing about 550 kilograms of cocaine, estimated to be about 440 million Australian dollars ($295 million), the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Border Force said in a joint statement released on Tuesday.
The first container inspected by Australian Border Force officers was marked as containing 20 pallets of rat poison and insecticide, which had been sent from Switzerland and arrived via Panama. They then intercepted a second container from the US, which was declared "plastic products". Inside were 11 plastic-wrapped packages containing lumps that tested positive for cocaine.
Australian police said the cocaine, if it found its way onto the streets, would pose a significant risk to Australian society.
Police are investigating the case and have not released any further information.
