Plastic usage is high, agency urges Singaporeans to reduce usage

Singapore, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Singaporeans use at least 1.76 billion plastic bags, bottles and single-use plastic containers each year, according to a new survey. The Singapore Environment Council plans to launch a public education campaign in the near future to encourage people to try to reduce their use of plastic products by one item a day.

The Environment Council and Deloitte Enterprise Risk Management Pte LTD surveyed 1,003 people of all ages about their plastic use behaviour between December last year and May this year.

Released on July 31, the survey found that Singaporeans use 1.76 billion plastic products each year, of which 820 million are plastic bags from supermarkets; 467 million plastic bottles; And 473 million plastic containers.

49% of the respondents said they used more than three plastic bags every time they went to the supermarket, and 14% of the respondents used more than six plastic bags every time they went to the supermarket, while only 15% of the people brought their own bags.

As for what to do with the plastic bags they take home, the majority of respondents said they would use them for garbage, and only 11 percent said they would reuse these shopping bags.

Supermarkets in Singapore generally provide plastic bags to customers at no extra charge. It is understood that the survey only looked at the use of plastic products in supermarkets, and the actual figure is likely to be higher.

According to statistics, 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide every year, and at least 8 million tons of plastic enter the ocean every year. In order to deal with the harm of plastic pollution, the theme of this year's World Environment Day is "plastic war", and many countries have responded to declare war on plastic.
