Frequent leakage and explosion accidents of famous brand mobile phones: when will the "death mobile phones" end?

Calling, texting, browsing Weibo, chatting on WeChat... mobile phones are becoming an indispensable necessity in people's lives from simple communication products. However, the frequent leakage, explosion and other vicious accidents of famous brand mobile phones such as Apple and Samsung have forced people to reflect: "Is my mobile phone safe?"

Mobile phone accidents occur frequently

According to incomplete statistics from reporters, from July 8 to 25, less than 20 days, there have been 6 mobile phone accidents in various places. Among them, Apple and Samsung mobile phones each accounted for half.

On the 8th, Samsung mobile phones took the lead in "making trouble". An 18-year-old woman in Neuchatel, Switzerland, suffered a burn on her thigh due to the explosion of the Samsung Galaxy S3 mobile phone battery in her trouser pocket. Subsequently, Samsung inspected the exploded mobile phone and stated that the battery was not an original Samsung product. This statement was confirmed by the Swiss Federal Institute for Materials Testing and Development.

On the evening of the 8th, Apple mobile phones followed closely. Wu Jiantong, a 30-year-old Jilin man in Beijing, was electrocuted and fell into a coma while charging his Apple iPhone 4 mobile phone. The report said that the mobile phone charger used by Wu Jiantong was not produced by the original manufacturer.

In the early morning of the 9th, Wang Kai from Chongqing placed his iPhone 4 next to his pillow before going to bed. Two hours later, a "bang" sounded in his bedroom. The phone exploded and quickly ignited the mat, pillow and mattress at the head of the bed. Thick smoke billowed in the bedroom. At that time, the phone was not charging.

At about 2 a.m. on the 13th, a Weibo post by netizen "M Xiaojing 1128" pushed people's attention to mobile phone accidents to a peak. The Weibo post said that on the 11th, her 23-year-old flight attendant sister was electrocuted to death when she answered a call with a charging Apple phone. Media reports said that the charger used by the China Southern Airlines flight attendant was not original.

On the 15th, a Swiss man put a Samsung mobile phone in his wife's handbag. After riding a motorcycle with his wife to a border city in Austria, he smelled a burning smell and found that a hole had been burned in the handbag and the upper left part of the mobile phone had been burned.

On the evening of the 25th, Mr. Du, 47, who lives in Jingtou Village, Ma On Shan, Hong Kong, had an even more bizarre experience. After dinner with his wife, he sat on the sofa in the living room and played with his mobile phone. Because the battery was low, he was charging while playing. Suddenly, there was a sound and the mobile phone exploded. He was startled and threw the mobile phone on the sofa. Then, the explosion of the mobile phone ignited the curtains and lampshades. The firefighters put out the fire for half an hour, but all the furniture was almost reduced to ashes. He said that the Samsung Galaxy S4 mobile phone that exploded was purchased through formal channels a month ago, and the mobile phone battery and charger were all original.

The reporter learned that since this year, Apple iPhon5, Samsung Galaxy Note2, HTC and other brands of mobile phones have exploded while charging. Looking at the above accidents, whether the mobile phone charger and battery are original or counterfeit, and whether it is charging or standby, the mobile phone may turn into a "grenade", which makes people feel hard to guard against.

Original & authentic & high quality & safe

Why do small mobile phones explode and leak electricity? Especially when the mobile phone battery and charger are both original and authentic, mobile phone accidents still occur. Industry experts said that mobile phone chargers and batteries are the culprits. Original and authentic does not mean that there are no safety and quality risks.

On July 19, a sampling test result released by the Beijing Industry and Commerce Bureau showed that a total of 14 companies produced mobile phone chargers that failed the random inspection. The problems involved included connection devices, electrical strength, overcharging protection and other items that did not meet the standards, which may cause electric shock to the human body and endanger the personal safety of consumers.

In March this year, the Zhejiang Provincial Industry and Commerce Bureau announced the results of random inspections of 36 mobile phone products. Among them, 9 batches were qualified and 27 batches were unqualified, with an unqualified rate of up to 75%, involving 17 well-known mobile phone brands such as Samsung, Philips, HTC, Lenovo, and Huawei. Among the 27 batches of unqualified mobile phones, 20 batches did not meet the standards for battery thermal shock. This indicator is a mandatory national safety indicator. Failure to meet the standard may lead to explosion, fire or leakage.

Telecom expert Xiang Ligang said that in addition to the quality of the product itself, the design of non-removable batteries represented by Apple mobile phones may also pose safety hazards. He said that most removable batteries are metal-encapsulated and have a higher safety factor, but the battery of Apple mobile phones is non-removable. Previously, he had replaced an Apple battery and found that there was no metal shell outside the battery, only a layer of material similar to a plastic film, and the battery had swelled. In contrast, this non-removable battery is more harmful once quality problems occur.

Lack of supervision of counterfeit products

Xiang Ligang said that in recent years, the culprits of mobile phone accidents were poor quality counterfeit chargers and batteries. When the reporter visited several digital cities in Taiyuan, he found that the market was flooded with a large number of chargers and batteries without the 3C certification mark.

At Taiyuan Sunshine Cyberport, a salesperson showed the reporter a 1500 mAh mobile phone battery produced by "Pisen", which was sold for only 35 yuan, much lower than the price of the original battery. The reporter found that the battery only had the EU's "CE" certification mark. The salesperson said that although the batteries and chargers they sold did not have the "CCC" mark, consumers rarely paid attention to this issue. Due to the "fair" price, sales have been good.

He Guili, director of China Telecommunication Technology Laboratory under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's Telecommunication Research Institute, said that although the country has implemented 3C certification for mobile phones since 2003, mobile phone chargers and batteries sold separately are not on the national mandatory product certification list. Due to the lack of mandatory standards, some manufacturers do not produce according to the standards, and market supervision lacks a basis, resulting in a relatively chaotic market order.

Taking mobile phone chargers as an example, Lv Baohua, market development manager of Agilent System Instrument Factory, said that the structure of mobile phone chargers includes a 220V AC high-voltage part, a transformer, and a DC low-voltage power supply part below 5V, and only the low-voltage power supply part is connected to the mobile phone. Under normal circumstances, output voltages below 5V will not cause harm to people. However, in counterfeit chargers, manufacturers cut corners, and the distance between circuits and components is far from the safety standard of 3-4mm spacing. This results in the possibility that once the USB port and the power supply are directly connected, the 220V voltage may generate high current and be directly transmitted to the mobile phone, resulting in electric shock.

When will the "death mobile phone" end?

Reporters found that in order to prevent mobile phone injuries, it is urgent to strengthen industry supervision and enhance consumer awareness.

Industry insiders called for the urgent task of including mobile phone chargers, batteries, etc. in the 3C certification list as soon as possible. When the first batch of national mandatory product lists were implemented in 2003, there were few chargers and batteries sold separately on the market. However, with the unification of mobile phone charging interface standards, some illegal vendors have ignored the personal safety of consumers in pursuit of profits, and there are serious safety hazards in product quality, which urgently need to be included in the mandatory certification list. At the same time, market supervision and punishment should be strengthened to increase the illegal costs of bad manufacturers and effectively protect the personal and property safety of consumers.

At the same time, it is very important to improve consumers' own awareness. On the one hand, we must consciously resist the temptation of low prices, buy regular mobile phone chargers and batteries, look for the 3C certification mark, and never ignore safety issues because of greed for cheapness. When purchasing, be sure to ask the dealer to indicate the origin, model and warranty period of the goods on the shopping invoice, and keep the shopping receipt.

On the other hand, we must learn to use mobile phones correctly. Xiang Ligang said that when charging a mobile phone, the original charger should be used, the charging time should not be too long, pay attention to the battery life, and try not to use it in harsh environments such as high temperature and exposure. When sleeping, try not to put the mobile phone next to the pillow to avoid being pressed and unable to dissipate heat.

Lv Baohua suggested that you try to avoid using the mobile phone while charging. He said that when using a mobile phone while charging, the battery is actually constantly switching between charging and discharging states, and the number of switches in 1 second is as high as 300 times, which causes great damage to the battery, and its safety hazards will also increase immediately.
