Garbage classification in Shanghai universities has evolved from a "new fashion" to a "good habit"
The garbage room that everyone avoided has been transformed into a "net-famous courtyard". At the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the garbage compartment, which was used as a centralized disposal point, has been transformed into another campus check-in spot.
A close look at the "courtyard" shows that the four-color trash cans are neatly arranged in an orderly manner, and there is no odor in the air. The recycled tires are painted in different colors and inlaid on the walls of the surrounding buildings, which complement the arc shape of the leisure corridor. The "corner" wood left over from the construction was also made into seats and eaves decorations, making the "courtyard" as a whole integrated with the greenery and small scenes around the campus.
In the two years since the implementation of the "Shanghai Municipal Domestic Waste Management Regulations", Shanghai universities have made every effort to promote the classification and reduction of domestic waste, and waste classification has gradually become a "new fashion" for teachers and students. The latest domestic waste classification assessment data in Shanghai shows that from January to August 2021, 100% of the city's colleges and universities had a comprehensive average score of more than 90 points, and the relevant scores have increased significantly compared with 2019.
How to turn "new fashion" into "good habit", colleges and universities have effectively improved the level of refined management of garbage classification through measures such as improving institutional norms, strengthening publicity and education, and promoting volunteer services, so as to achieve both "garbage classification effectiveness" and "student classification awareness".
Garbage classification has become a "compulsory course" for freshmen
"A simple act of garbage classification can turn the smelly garbage that we avoid into valuable resources. Reducing garbage from the source is a more powerful "garbage magic". Are you willing to accept our invitation and become a campus "garbage magician"? "At the beginning of this fall semester, at the Tongji University welcome site, each new student received a garbage classification promotion leaflet designed by students, which was vivid and interesting.
Now, Shanghai universities have included garbage classification in the "compulsory course" for freshmen, and enhanced the garbage classification awareness of teachers and students through various forms of publicity and education activities. At the same time, all colleges and universities in the city have established branches of college students' garbage classification volunteer services.
In the gift bag for freshmen at Fudan University, there is a copy of the "Fudan University Convention on the Classification of Domestic Waste", and the school has also included test questions on waste classification in the entrance examination. In the entrance education phase, the school has incorporated waste classification education into the freshman entrance education curriculum system, and has continuously strengthened the classification awareness of freshmen by recording special videos on waste classification and holding special lectures on waste classification.
Shanghai Jianqiao University has not only included waste classification in the freshman registration manual and distributed it together with the admission notice, but also included waste classification in the curriculum system. Since 2020, waste classification has been included in the freshman entrance education and the "Situation and Policy" course. After all freshmen enter the school, the first lecture of the "Situation and Policy" course is the waste classification topic.
"Technology +" improves the intelligence of waste classification
In the discussion corner in the central area of the library of Tongji University's Siping Road campus, there are red, blue, black and brown collection boxes of different sizes, which are used to place hazardous waste, recyclables (for paper), recyclables (for plastic bottles and cans), dry garbage and wet garbage respectively. This is a personalized collection container tailored by the teacher and student team of Tongji University for the library according to local conditions.
Looking closely at the box, the designer's intentions can be seen from the details. Although they are all used for the placement of recyclables, the box for recycling paper is rectangular, and the box for recycling plastic bottles and cans is 2 round, which intuitively guides the correct placement. Secondly, the box for wet garbage is narrow. The library does not encourage students to bring food into the library. Considering that there is a self-service coffee machine in the lobby, only a small wet garbage bin is set up on the first floor. There are no wet garbage bins on the second floor and above. On the adjacent wall, there is also a creative poster designed by students for "Tongji University's Guide to the Classification of Domestic Waste", and the relevant guiding slogans are concise and clear.
The personalized and precise layout and design transformation of the library's garbage classification originated from the results of an undergraduate innovation training project conducted by Wang Hanxue and three other undergraduates from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tongji University. Under the guidance of Professor He Pinjing, Director of the Institute of Solid Waste Treatment and Resource Utilization and the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tongji University, the team conducted field research on the characteristics of garbage generation in the library, abandoned the previous extensive model of setting up four garbage bins of the same size in each place, and explored a more reasonable, efficient and innovative model of garbage classification that is adapted to local conditions.
Huang Xiangfeng, Vice President of Tongji University, said in an interview that relying on the advantages of environmental disciplines, the school is committed to promoting students to establish a systematic and structured knowledge system of garbage classification in theory. At the same time, students are encouraged to combine learning with innovative practice and contribute ideas for garbage classification.
The 75 sets of intelligent IoT sanitation garbage bins newly purchased by Fudan University have initially established a garbage classification "Internet of Things" covering all four campuses, effectively improving the level of intelligent work. These intelligent garbage bins have data transmission and sharing functions. Through the statistics and analysis of data such as the location, status, number of placements and proportion of equipment, the whole process management of classification, placement, collection and transportation can be realized.
In the "Old Materials Courtyard" of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the on-site resource-based harmless treatment unit for wet garbage "swallows" the smelly wet garbage every day and produces nutritious green organic fertilizer. Since its opening at the beginning of this year, the wet garbage generated by the Fenyang campus has achieved "zero transportation". Students also gave full play to their expertise in music and created a number of songs to promote garbage sorting. The campus song "Let's Sorting Garbage Together" has been performed many times on the streets, communities, parks, hospitals and other platforms. Hou Liyu, vice president of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, said, "The school mobilized all staff to participate in creating a "green campus" in all aspects, and led a new trend in modern university governance through garbage sorting."
Reporters learned that 112 campuses of 63 universities in Shanghai have been fully covered by third-party evaluations. Relevant departments conduct comprehensive reviews of all universities every quarter and every six months, and announce the evaluation and review results to the whole city.
Zhang Xu, director of the School Logistics and Security Department of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, introduced that the "Shanghai School Domestic Waste Classification Effectiveness Supervision Platform" officially launched in the fall semester this year has integrated the effective data of domestic waste classification in the city's colleges and universities, and reflected the monthly third-party evaluation of waste classification in real time. It not only provides scientific data support for the formulation of waste classification policies, but also provides data services for colleges and universities to improve their waste classification management level.
Educate people through multi-scenario practice, and promote the awareness of waste classification to be deeply rooted in the hearts of the people
At present, more colleges and universities in Shanghai are educating people through multi-scenario practice to promote the awareness of waste classification to be deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.
Tongji University has a public general elective course "Waste Classification and Social Governance" for all undergraduates. The team of Professor He Pinjing of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering will talk about the professional knowledge system of solid waste pollution control and resource utilization. The course extracts the content that best reflects China's social governance concepts and achievements, and inspires China's institutional advantages and technical originality. Through heuristic, discussion-based, and situational teaching methods, it guides students to strengthen their confidence in the road and truly understand the social significance of current waste classification.
Since 2010, Shanghai Jianqiao University has implemented a civilized self-cultivation project with cleaning the campus as the main content. In 2020, the labor education base was opened and an upgraded version of the compulsory course "Labor Education" was opened. The course content includes cleaning the campus, participating in the production process of sowing, maintenance, and harvesting of crops, allowing students to practice, work hard, and deeply understand "the difficulty of every meal, the hardship of every thread." In addition, the school regularly advocates the "Clean Plate Campaign" and carries out activities such as Clean Plate Etiquette.
Chen Wei, vice president of Shanghai Jianqiao University, introduced that the school has achieved garbage reduction at the source through various practice platforms such as civilized self-cultivation, labor education, and Clean Plate Campaign, as well as the upgrading of hardware facilities. The school combines garbage classification with labor education to enrich the connotation of labor education.
