Highlighting environmental features, the 2019 Dakar Rally promotes environmental awareness

Xinhua News Agency, Lima, Jan. 7 (Reporter Zhang Guoying) The 2019 Dakar Rally was ignited on the 7th. While striving to run the event well, the host country Peru actively advocated environmental awareness and practiced environmental protection actions to make the event highlight environmental protection characteristics.

The starting ceremony of the contest was held on the 6th in the Green Coast of Lima, the capital. The next 11 days of the official race were all held in five provinces of Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna. Environmental protection in the region through which the race will be held has put Peru under considerable pressure.

In order to enhance people's awareness of environmental protection, so that the sports competition has always assumed the responsibility of environmental protection, the Peruvian Ministry of Environment launched the "Clean Peru" environmental protection campaign during the competition, requiring that public places be cleaned up in time, solid waste classification is implemented, and the use of disposable plastic products is reduced. To this end, the ministry of Environment has arranged 250 environmental advocates in the camps and spectator areas of each stage.

This year's Dakar Rally has only 10 stages, making it the shortest race in history, but camps will be set up at each stage to ensure drivers recover and adjust their vehicles. This year, Peru not only set up garbage recycling islands in the camps, but also sent environmental advocates to guide people to separate and throw away their garbage.

In mid-December last year, the Peruvian government issued a decree to regulate the use and production of single-use plastic products within China, and gradually ban the use of plastic bags and plastic straws within three years. To publicize and implement the new environmental protection rules, contest organizers promised to prepare eco-friendly kitchenware for diners, a measure that will avoid the use of 45,000 plastic plates and cutlery. In addition, environmental promoters are promoting the use of reusable cloth bags in camp and spectator areas.
