How can the hotel industry practice the ESG concept and promote green and sustainable development?

CCTV News From November 28 to December 1, the 8th China International Hotel Industry Conference, hosted by the China Hotel Association, Hainan International Economic Development Bureau, and Hainan Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, was held in Haikou, Hainan. With the theme of "Green Leading, Integrity and Innovation", this event focuses on five major sections, including annual inventory outlook, high-quality results release, green annual meeting, green product docking, and free trade port cooperation, to grasp the development trend, clarify development ideas, expand consumption space, innovate consumption scenarios, enrich consumption experience, and lead the industry's high-quality development with "green dual national standards".

It is worth mentioning that this conference officially released the group standards "ESG Management System Requirements for Accommodation Industry" and "ESG Evaluation Guidelines for Accommodation Enterprises" to promote the sustainable development of the hotel industry. In fact, in the process of drafting this group standard, Shanghai Jinjiang International Hotels Co., Ltd., as one of the drafting units, played an important role. At the conference, Tang Ming, CEO of Jinjiang International Hotel Management Co., Ltd., accepted an exclusive interview with CCTV.com reporters online, exploring the new direction of green transformation of China's hotel industry from the perspective of ESG and providing relevant insights for the sustainable development of the industry.

Question: "Green leadership, integrity and innovation" is the theme of this conference. At present, ESG in the hotel industry is advancing rapidly. Major hotel and travel companies are accelerating their layout in green environmental protection and launching corresponding sustainable development strategies. Please share how Jinjiang Radisson Hotel integrates ESG into the operation of different hotel scenarios? How to coordinate suppliers, investors, consumers and other stakeholders to jointly promote ESG?

Tang Ming: Environment, society and governance (ESG) are important issues concerning all mankind. In this regard, Jinjiang International Group, together with the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), global head hotel groups, distribution partners, experts, international organizations and government agencies, jointly launched the "Hotel Sustainability Basics" (HSB). Since July last year, Jinjiang Hotel has established a special working group on HSB and took the lead in launching 8 priority actions in China, including measuring and reducing energy and water consumption, encouraging hotels to use green cleaning products, providing vegetarian options, not providing disposable plastic straws and stirring rods, and advocating to reduce the number of bedding changes to continuing guests. In October of the same year, specific implementation guidelines were issued for its Chinese hotels.

So far, 17 hotels under "Jinjiang Radisson Hotel" have completed 8 primary benchmark verifications in the HSB initiative and obtained the HSB logo. "Jinjiang Radisson Hotel" promises that nearly 60% of its hotels will complete 8 primary benchmark verifications by the end of 2023, and plans to complete 12 benchmark verifications for all its hotels by the end of 2026. In addition, Jinjiang Radisson Hotel regularly conducts effective communication with relevant suppliers and maintains transparency of information disclosure to investors. In the future, guests will be able to participate in activities such as "Clean Plate Action" and "Zero Carbon Accommodation and Conference" in the hotel to jointly promote ESG construction.

Question: The Hotel Sustainability Benchmark (HSB) is a globally recognized standard tailored for the hotel industry. It includes 12 actions related to hotel sustainable development, covering three major themes: efficiency, earth, and humanities. As a promoter and practitioner of the benchmark in China, what useful experience and good examples has Jinjiang provided for the sustainable development of the industry?

Tang Ming: In the process of actively promoting high-quality development, we deeply realize that the realization of environmental, social and governance goals is not only our responsibility, but also a necessary path for long-term development. We regard the Hotel Sustainability Benchmark (HSB) as a key starting point for sustainable development. In fact, the 12 benchmarks of HSB not only mark the beginning of our sustainable development journey, but also the key standard for measuring our progress. We are making every effort to promote all hotels under "Jinjiang Radisson Hotel" to pass HSB verification, and use it as the basis for deepening our future ESG work. This move is not only in line with the long-term goals of our parent company, but also our firm commitment to investors and social environmental responsibilities.

Question: In the context of the rapid development of science and technology, how does Jinjiang Hotel use technologies such as AI and big data to support the green development strategy? How do these technologies help hotels improve energy efficiency and achieve HSB standards?

Tang Ming: First of all, keeping up with the global ban and restriction of plastic, some hotel guest control systems under "Jinjiang Radisson Hotel" have adopted a card-free power supply intelligent design to reduce plastic power supply cards. This system will be implemented in all newly opened hotels in the future. In addition, we plan to use a third-party intelligent system to conduct daily data statistics, and use data as a support to adjust the order quantity of ingredients as appropriate, effectively improve the utilization rate of raw materials and ingredients, thereby reducing the loss rate, reducing waste, and achieving sustainable development.

Question: Green development has become the main line of brand development in the accommodation and catering industry during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. In the future, what long-term plans does Jinjiang Radisson Hotel have to promote the construction of green hotels? In addition, what opinions or suggestions do you have on the hotel industry in achieving green transformation?

Tang Ming: "Jinjiang Radisson Hotel" will continue to contribute to the sustainable development of the tourism industry through solid HSB benchmark implementation, comprehensive ESG strategic planning, and close cooperation with industry partners. In order to achieve the ESG goals set in 2024, "Jinjiang Radisson Hotel" plans to implement carbon reduction goals by optimizing linen management, promoting green travel, establishing an energy consumption database, formulating sustainable building standards, and promoting "zero-carbon accommodation and meetings". We are well aware that achieving ESG goals cannot rely solely on the efforts of a single company, but requires the collective wisdom and cooperation of the industry. Therefore, through green group work, we actively participate in the promotion of various national standards including "Green Hotel", and sincerely call on industry partners and upstream and downstream partners to join hands with us to share experiences, explore strategies, promote sustainable development goals, and accelerate the quality upgrade of the tourism industry. We hope that through this industry cooperation, we can more effectively promote the entire industry to develop in a greener and more sustainable direction.

In the future, "Jinjiang Radisson Hotel" will continue to adhere to the path of green and high-quality development, based on in-depth insights into the market, fully combine the actual situation of the hotel, explore sustainable development methods for the hotel, provide the industry with experience worth learning from, and provide every guest with a quality experience that exceeds expectations.
