Panama becomes first country in Central America to ban plastic bags to reduce marine debris

Beijing, March 15, according to the South American overseas Chinese newspaper network reported that the Panamanian government recently said that in order to reduce the amount of Marine litter in the Pacific and the Caribbean, they decided to ban the use of disposable plastic bags in shops.

According to reports, the United Nations Environment Program has previously pointed out that trillions of plastic bags flow into the ocean every year, posing a threat to more than 600 Marine species around the world.

Experts predict that by 2050, there will be more plastic bags than fish in the oceans, with negative impacts on the environment, fisheries, tourism and economies of coastal countries. Panama, with its 3,000km of coastline, will be most directly affected, so the Panamanian government must include the protection of Marine ecosystems in its environmental protection plans.

The Panamanian government says it has started to try to ban plastic bags, which they expect will reduce the use of Chinese plastic bags by 20%. "Since January 20, 2018, Panamanian President JuanCarlosVarela has proposed a ban on the use of plastic bags by Chinese businesses in Panama, and supermarkets, pharmacies and retail stores have 18 months to phase out the use of plastic bags," the expert said.

The United Nations Environment Program also pointed out that at present, more than 30 countries around the world have joined the "clean oceans" movement, they have passed legislation to reduce the excessive use of plastics, and take other measures such as establishing Marine protected areas or cleaning up beaches to protect the Marine environment and reduce the pollution of plastic products to Marine life and ecological environment.
