Suspect in US serial parcel bomb incident charged with 30 counts

Washington, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- A Florida man, Cesar Sajok, was charged with 30 counts of mailing a large number of packages containing improvised explosive devices, the U.S. Department of Justice reported Tuesday. Sajok appeared in court in New York City on the same day. The

notice said the charges against Sajok include five counts of use of a weapon of mass destruction, five counts of interstate transportation of explosives, five counts of unlawful use of mail, and five counts of carrying explosives while engaged in felony activity. If convicted on some of the charges, Sayok faces life in prison.

The report said that between October 22 and November 2, the FBI and other agents found 16 packages that Sajok sent to various places in the United States, including former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, investor George Soros, CNN headquarters and other recipients. Fortunately, none of the packages exploded, and no one was injured.

The 16 packages had a similar appearance and all contained explosives-filled plastic pipes, small timers and wires, and some contained broken glass, according to the Justice Department. Investigators found Sayok's fingerprints on some of the packages, as well as incriminating evidence on his computer and mobile phone.

The series of package bombs, which occurred just before the U.S. midterm elections were voted on, was characterized by prosecutors as a "homegrown terrorist attack," and Sajok was arrested in Plantichen, Florida, on Oct. 26.

Public profiles show that Sayok, 56, is a registered Republican who has been arrested several times in the past few years, and his anti-Democratic sentiments are evident on social media.
