Plastic bag charges are not effective, UK supermarkets switch to paper bags
China news network April 6, according to Hong Kong "Wen Wei Po" reported that the United Kingdom began to charge plastic bags in recent years, but failed to curb the abuse of plastic bags, resulting in a large number of plastic waste. Britain's fourth largest supermarket chain Morrisons announced that from next week gradually in Wales, England and Scotland branches to provide paper shopping bags, is the UK's first supermarket chain to provide paper bags.
In 2015, Morrisons charged 5 pence (about 0.5 yuan) for each single-use plastic bag, and later introduced a 20 pence (about 2 yuan) charge for reusable bags, but it failed to significantly reduce the use of plastic bags.
Therefore, the group decided to introduce reusable paper bags, which can carry up to 16kg and charge the same 20p each. In January, the group began a trial in eight branches. The response was positive, and many customers were happy to adopt the paper bags.
Morrisons said the switch to paper bags would reduce plastic waste by 1,300 tonnes a year, and it is expected that the move will prompt other supermarkets in the UK to offer fewer plastic bags.
