Takata airbag problem affects tens of millions of vehicles, but some manufacturers in China have not yet issued a recall

China news network October 28, recently, Volkswagen Sagitta due to "broken shaft" incident has become the focus of attention in the automotive news, but another recall is also not low, that is due to "Takata problem airbags" caused by the global large-scale recall. Recently, the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (referred to as NHTSA) issued a notice that 2013 and 2014 so far, Takata airbag failure led to a total recall of 7.8 million cars in the United States, if expanded to the global scope, the recall of vehicles has long exceeded 10 million. At the same time, the NHTSA also pointed out that the use of Takata has safety risks involving Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors and other brands.

Japan's Takata, the world's leading supplier of automotive airbags, said inflators used in older models of airbags could explode with too much force, causing plastic and metal shards to injure drivers and passengers. The defective parts are in at least 12 million vehicles worldwide, according to Takata. In China, only Nissan, Honda, Mazda, BMW and Toyota have issued recalls of vehicles with defective Takata airbags. Most brands have not issued any recall announcements.

Federal safety regulators on Wednesday expanded the number of vehicles with Takata parts that could be recalled in the United States to include 7.8 million vehicles from 10 automakers. Federal safety regulators have issued several warnings about the airbag defect, including in most models sold in humid climates that can cause the inflators to fail prematurely. So far, 6.1 million vehicles have been recalled for the problem, and Honda, Takata's biggest customer, is facing a slew of lawsuits in the United States.

It comes on the heels of Toyota's recall of 247,000 vehicles in the United States over the defect, and on the heels of two lawsuits filed against Honda in the United States over faulty airbags in older models. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a statement urging brands such as Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors to immediately issue recall notices and send customers to dealerships to replace the defective parts.

Following recalls in China by Toyota, Honda and BMW over faulty airbags, Nissan announced last week that it would recall 260,000 vehicles worldwide, including the March(Micra in Europe) and Cube models, due to defective driver's seat airbags made by Takata. Of those vehicles, 104,905 are in Japan, 30,000 in Europe and 11,000 in China. However, Dongfeng Nissan has already recalled several models over the problem.

Audi officials also recently announced that due to the hidden air bag, it will recall about 850,000 Audi A4 cars produced after 2012 globally, of which 250,000 will be involved in China, including the imported A4, A4 travel version, A4Allroad and China's A4L. However, Audi said the recall has nothing to do with the defective airbags made by Japan's Takata.

Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Mercedes, Audi, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors were among the brands named by Takata as having the defective airbags, but some of those brands have so far made no mention of recalls of models with the defective airbags in China. According to the report, almost all Japanese brands have cooperated with Takata, so the number of vehicles recalled by Japanese brands should also be the largest. (Chinanews.com Automotive Channel)
