The most powerful scientific expedition in history has set sail for the polar regions

Science and Technology Daily Qingdao, August 28 (reporter Gao Bo) On the morning of the 28th, China's most advanced scientific research ship "Xiangyanghong 01" left Qingdao dock and began global scientific research. It will be China's highest level of global ocean research, and it is also the first voyage to integrate oceanic and polar research.

In the 19th century, the British HMS Challenger's four-year scientific expedition around the world laid the foundation of oceanography. The global comprehensive scientific expedition "Xiangyanghong 01" mainly focused on the southern Hemisphere ocean, which is less known by mankind, and toured the Southern Indian Ocean, the South Atlantic Ocean and the southeast Pacific Ocean to comprehensively investigate resources, environment and climate.

The expedition is expected to last 260 days. It will stop at Cape Town in South Africa, Punta Arenas in the southernmost part of South America, China's Antarctic Great Wall Station, Papeete in French Polynesia and Guam along the way, before returning to Qingdao in May 2018.

The first leg investigated rare earth resources and deep sea environment in the Central Indian Ocean Basin; The second and third leg investigated polymetallic sulfide resources and environment in the mid-Atlantic ridge; The fourth leg conducted a comprehensive survey of the Marine environment around the Antarctic Peninsula; And the 56th section investigates rare earth resources and environment in the Southeast Pacific Basin. The entire voyage collected data on hydrometeorology, seawater chemistry, plankton, chlorophyll, nutrient structure, oceanic microplastics, radionuclides, ocean mapping and sounding balloons.

According to the plan, Xiangyanghong 01 will conduct joint scientific research with Xuelong in the waters near the Great Wall Station in Antarctica. In the past, Xuelong mainly carried polar research equipment and personnel, and had limited Marine research energy. The addition of Xiangyanghong 01 will help China deepen its knowledge of the Southern Ocean, the waters surrounding Antarctica. Sun Yongfu, deputy director of the State Oceanic Administration's Institute of Oceanography, said one feature of the expedition is to go to the South Atlantic and Southern oceans, which China rarely touches. Lin Shanqing, deputy director of the State Oceanic Administration, said at the departure ceremony that the expedition shoulders a number of tasks such as oceans, polar regions and global environmental hot spots, breaking through the previous single-team mode of missions, opening up different mission objectives, effectively integrating resources, improving the efficiency of the voyage, setting a precedent for China's Marine scientific investigation, and is a global scientific expedition with a glorious mission. It will play a positive role in enhancing the national deep-sea science innovation capability and promoting the development of Marine high-tech.

"Xiangyanghong 01" was delivered in June 2016. It is the new champion of China's scientific research vessels, and has sailed 43,000 nautical miles so far. With a displacement of nearly 5,000 tons, it can sail 15,000 nautical miles at a refueling time and resist force 12 winds. According to Sun, life on board is more comfortable, with crew members living in double rooms, using wechat at sea and video chatting with family members.

According to reports, the multi-beam depth detection system carried by Xiangyanghong 01 can "see" the ups and downs of the seabed through the sea water; Shallow strata profiler, you can understand the composition and geology of the shallow seabed; Multi-channel seismic instrument, which can know the material of deep seabed crust; And heat-flow probes that can "take the temperature" of the seabed. This comprehensive expedition will conduct a comprehensive "physical examination" for the waters of the Antarctic Peninsula.
