The new polyamide 6 (PA6) compound has superior properties than the typical PA6

Pawtucket, Rhode Island, USA, August 26, 2019: Creamid® P series polyamide 6 (PA 6) compounds absorb nearly one-third less water at saturation than typical PA6, resulting in 15-25% better tensile properties in the wet state, and exhibit higher fluidity and superior surface properties, even in formulations with higher fiberglass fill rates. Teknor Apex Company will be presenting these compounds at K 2019 (Hall 6, Booth C58-01).

The Creamid P series, designed by Teknor Apex, is the latest in a series of high-performance specialty polyamides for use in some structural components that replace metals. Based on advanced formulation technology, Teknor Apex reduces the water absorption of a wide range of polyamides 6 and 6/66 compounds, including a variety of glass/mineral reinforcing materials, impact resistant materials, flame retardant materials and other specialty compounds. In addition, based on an advanced thermal stabilization system, Creamid P series compounds retain excellent physical properties at prolonged high temperatures.

At K 2019, the company will first introduce two Creamid P compounds with a glass fiber content of 30% and 50% respectively. These compounds absorb about 80 percent less water and 30 percent less saturated water than typical polyamide 6 after being humidity conditioned for 24 hours. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, Creamid® in the wet state; P2H7G6 and Creamid P3H2G10 exhibit higher tensile modulus and tensile fracture strength than typical PA6.

New Business Development ETP Director Markus Krippner points out: "In the past, the PA 6 compounds were not suitable for some structural applications due to their high water absorption, but now the compounds of the Creamid P series are able to meet the requirements of these applications because of their significantly improved wet tensile properties. In the same way, this technology can be used to optimize the performance of polyamide 66 compounds."

Automotive applications

In helical fluid flow tests, these new compounds showed higher fluidity than typical polyamide 6, but the mold shrinkage level is similar to the latter, and can be processed using existing equipment and molds.

Compounds from the Creamid P series are available worldwide. Teknor Apex currently sells several standard grades, but as a manufacturer of high-performance modified plastics, they are happy to work closely with each customer to develop a variety of customized high-performance plastics.
