To counter Japan? South Korea strengthens safety inspections on imported waste batteries and tires

China news network August 16, according to Korea International Radio (KBS)16 reported that the South Korean government decided to strengthen the safety management of imported waste batteries and waste tires. The South Korean government has announced that it will conduct a comprehensive inspection of radioactive and heavy metal pollution on Japanese coal slag.

Coal cinder accounted for about half of the 2.54 million tons of recyclable waste imported from overseas in 2018, along with batteries, tires and plastics, according to reports. Imports of recyclable waste are increasing each year, and the scale is getting larger, about 15 times that of exports.

The South Korean government has announced that it will conduct a comprehensive inspection of Japanese coal slag for radioactive and heavy metal pollution. On the 16th, it decided to strengthen the inspection of three imported waste products, waste batteries, waste tires and waste plastics. South Korea has been inspecting waste products from Japan and Russia on a quarterly basis for radioactive and heavy metal contamination, but will now inspect them once a month.

The environment Ministry said it would step up inspections of imported waste and would immediately return it if radioactive contamination exceeded the standard.

The Japanese government decided on Tuesday to remove South Korea from its "white list" of countries that can enjoy preferential treatment in export management.

In announcing countermeasures against Japan on the same day, Hong Nam-ki, Deputy Prime Minister of Economy and Finance and Minister of Strategy and Finance, said that security measures will be strengthened in areas such as tourism, food and waste.
