UN officials call on countries to work together to combat marine plastic pollution
Nairobi, March 1 (Xinhua) -- The resumed fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly was held in Nairobi, capital of Kenya, from February 28 to March 2. Peter Thomson, Special envoy of the UN Secretary-General for ocean affairs, said it is urgent to tackle Marine plastic pollution and the international community should join hands to solve the problem.
The amount of plastic in the oceans is too large to count, posing a serious threat to Marine ecosystems, and no country is immune from Marine pollution, Thomson said at an ocean forum held on the sidelines of the resumed session. Protecting the ocean is everyone's responsibility, and the international community should "develop solutions to open a new chapter in global ocean action", Thomson said.
Experts at the meeting all said that Marine pollution control is a big and lasting project, which calls for appropriate actions by all countries, continuous strengthening of international coordination and cooperation, and continuous promotion of Marine protection. UN Environment Program Executive Director Inghe Arnolsen urged countries to step up efforts to solve the problem of plastic pollution at the meeting, "We must work together to maintain the health of the ocean, otherwise the consequences are unimaginable."The first phase of the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly will be held in February 2021. The second phase of the resumed session is under the overall theme of "Strengthening Natural action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals", with a focus on plastic pollution, green recycling and chemical waste management.
