Polystyrene foam has a closed-cell structure, low water absorption, excellent water resistance; low density, generally 0.015-0.03; good mechanical strength, excellent cushioning performance; good processability, easy molding; good colorability, strong temperature adaptability, excellent anti-radioactivity, etc., and has high dimensional accuracy and uniform structure. Therefore, it has a high share in exterior wall insulation. However, when burned, it will release styrene gas that pollutes the environment. It is a Class B material in the construction profession.
Polystyrene foam is widely used in cushioning packaging of various precision instruments, meters, household appliances, etc. It can also be directly made into cups, plates, boxes and other packaging containers to package items. It is widely used in special well drilling construction (freezing method to construct composite well wall). It has good mechanical strength, excellent cushioning performance, good processability, easy molding, good colorability, strong temperature adaptability, excellent anti-radioactivity and other advantages.
The main ways to recycle polystyrene foam are: granulation after volume reduction, crushing and use as various filling materials, cracking and oil production or recycling styrene and others.
1. Granulation after volume reduction: Polystyrene foam can be melt-extruded and granulated to make recycled granules, but it is bulky and inconvenient to transport. Usually, it needs to be reduced in volume before recycling. The methods include mechanical method, solvent method and heating method.
2. Used as filler after crushing: Polystyrene foam products can be used as fillers after crushing to make various products.
