China launches pilot program for sustainable aviation fuel application, 12 flights to be officially refueled

According to the website of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Civil Aviation Administration of China held a pilot launch ceremony for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Beijing on September 18. According to the pilot work arrangement, starting from September 19, 12 flights of Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines departing from Beijing Daxing, Chengdu Shuangliu, Zhengzhou Xinzheng and Ningbo Lishe airports will be officially refilled with SAF.

about 99% of civil aviation fuel consumption carbon emissions from aviation flight activities. Controlling and reducing jet fuel consumption and actively promoting the decarbonization of jet fuel is the main direction of Civil Aviation's comprehensive promotion of green and low-carbon transformation. While the emission reduction potential of traditional technologies and management means is limited, sustainable aviation fuel has advantages such as compatibility with existing facilities and equipment, and significant carbon reduction effect in the whole life cycle. The development of sustainable aviation fuel is the current practical path for civil aviation to actively implement the national "dual carbon" strategic deployment and realize green transformation in an all-round way. It is also a strategic means for civil aviation to enhance the development momentum and win the development initiative in the future. The development of sustainable aviation fuel is characterized by a wide range of fields, a long industrial chain and outstanding high-tech attributes. It can generate new industries, new models and new driving forces, and is an important starting point for civil aviation to extend the industrial chain and cultivate and develop new quality productivity.

SAF is an aviation fuel made from renewable resources or waste. Saf has a significant life-cycle emission reduction effect and can be well compatible with existing aircraft and civil aviation infrastructure. The pilot will be implemented in two phases, and research and exploration will be carried out simultaneously in key areas such as oil supply assurance, oil quality monitoring, effect evaluation, and mechanism and standard construction. The first phase will run from September to December 2024, with Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines as well as Beijing Daxing Airport, Chengdu Shuangliu Airport, Zhengzhou Xinzheng Airport and Ningbo Lishe Airport participating in the first phase. The second phase will cover the whole year of 2025, with the number of participating units gradually increasing. To ensure safety, the sustainable aviation fuel used during the pilot period has been certified as airworthy by the Civil Aviation Administration, which directs China Aviation Oil to strictly control the quality of oil products.

Up to now, China's transport fleet has been maintained at about 9 years old; New energy vehicles account for more than 27% in airports, and nearly 80% in new airports such as Daxing and Tianfu. The installation rate and utilization rate of APU replacement equipment for aircraft near aircraft seats at large and medium-sized airports remained above 95%; Airport photovoltaic projects generate more than 60 million KWH of electricity annually; China's flights and airport terminals have basically stopped providing disposable non-degradable plastic tableware; And the carbon intensity of its transport fleet and airports has been further reduced, reaching 0.276 kg per tonne-kilometer and 0.869 kg per passenger, respectively, leading the way among major aviation powers.
