How to clean and disinfect the home environment after a flood disaster?

At present, many places in north and south China are suffering from heavy rains and floods. After the occurrence of floods, various diseases are prone to occur due to environmental pollution, vector breeding and other factors. Ensuring a clean living environment can help avoid the outbreak of infectious diseases.

Deputy director of the hospital department (Public health Department) of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University Chen Qiong and staff member Wei Qianqian said in an interview that after the flood, the water in the house should be removed as soon as possible, and then the house should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before moving in. Before the house is cleaned, it is necessary to classify the indoor items. Usually some materials that are not easy to absorb water, such as metal, glass and hard plastic, can be cleaned and dried, while items that are highly absorbent, such as carpets, are difficult to clean and dry after a flood and can be considered discarded. In addition, food, beverages, medicines and other damaged outer packaging that have been contaminated by floods cannot be cleaned and disinfected, and it is recommended to discard.

Chen Qiong said that when cleaning the indoor environment, first clean the ground and walls, household appliances, furniture and other hard surfaces. The ground and walls can be sprayed or wiped with 500mg/L chlorine-containing disinfectant solution, 200mg/L chlorine dioxide or 1000mg/L peracetic acid for disinfection, and then wiped with clean water after 30 minutes. Dry household appliances thoroughly before disinfecting them with professional sterilizing spray. Do not use electricity until they are completely dry. After cleaning furniture, sanitary ware, office supplies, etc., rinse, wipe or soak with 500mg/L chlorine-containing disinfectant solution for 30 minutes, or use 200mg/L chlorine dioxide, 1000mg/L peracetic acid, 1000mg/L quaternary ammonium salt disinfectant for disinfection treatment for 15 to 30 minutes. After disinfection, wipe clean with clean water.

Wei Qianqian said that knives, bowls and chopsticks and other tableware after cleaning is preferred to boil disinfection, boiling time should be more than 15 minutes. Soft fabrics such as clothes and bed sheets can be thoroughly cleaned with high temperature water and detergent above 60 degrees Celsius, and exposed to the sun for disinfection.

Chen Qiong reminded that when using cleaners and disinfectants, you should carefully read and follow the instructions on the product label, and do not mix them. In order to reduce the health risks caused by microbial breeding, fans can be used to increase air circulation during and after house cleaning. At the same time, we should also pay attention to personal protection, strengthen hand hygiene, in the event of diarrhea, fever and other symptoms, to seek medical attention in time and report to the disease control department for corresponding measures.
