Malaysia will impose recycling fees on imported plastic waste from June
Malaysia's housing and Local Government Minister Zulaida said on April 4 that starting from June 2021, the recycling fee of 20 ringgit (about 35 yuan) per metric ton of plastic waste imported into the country will be levied.
He pointed out that the move is to regulate and promote the development of recycling industry in Malaysia, but also to solve the pollution problem caused by foreign waste on the local environment.
As of February 2021, there are 71 legitimate enterprises in Malaysia with national waste import licences. (Bureau Reporter Tsui Twin-Lok)
