Modi: India will say goodbye to single-use plastics and plans to develop alternatives

Modi says it's time to say goodbye to single-use plastics. The way forward, he said, would start with behavioural change. The desired results can only be seen when all sectors of society decide to achieve certain goals. India had reportedly pledged in 2018 to end the use of all single-use plastics by 2022.

At a media briefing, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar had said, "He (Modi) did not say a ban. He said, 'Goodbye' to single-use plastics. He's not talking about all waste, he's calling on people not to use it." "Not recycling plastic is a real problem, so the focus should also be on recycling and reuse," Javadekar said. "So there will be two actions: one is to recycle, reuse and manage plastic waste, and the other is to say 'no' to single-use plastic."
