Monkeys eat plastic bags thrown by tourists

During the Chinese New Year, whether visiting relatives and friends or going out for fun, everyone should be happy.

But early yesterday morning, a reader named Xiaoyu sent a message to our official WeChat account, telling us what she and her mother saw and heard when they went to Hangzhou Zoo on the fifth day of the Chinese New Year.

Xiaoyu lives in Daguan Community. On the afternoon of the fifth day of the Chinese New Year, she witnessed the uncivilized behavior of tourists and even saw a monkey accidentally eating a plastic bag thrown by tourists.

Because of this, Xiaoyu's good mood when she went out also turned into worry about the animals.

So, she is still worried and hopes to call on tourists to love and treat animals well through this newspaper.

The young couple fed the black bear half a box of biscuits and three loaves of bread.

At about 1 pm on the fifth day of the Chinese New Year, Xiaoyu and her mother came to Hangzhou Zoo and prepared to have a good time. They didn't go home until about 4 pm.

Pandas, kangaroos, monkeys, tigers, lions... For more than three hours, the mother and daughter visited the zoo inside and out.

Because she hadn't been to the zoo for a long time, Xiaoyu looked at each venue very carefully. Once she saw it, the problem came out.

"The fully enclosed venues are quite safe. If tourists want to attract the attention of animals, they just need to tap the glass and shout a few times. But semi-enclosed ones, like the places where black bears, tigers, and monkeys live, are a bit worrying!"

The first thing that caught her attention was Black Bear Mountain. A round, cute black bear became the protagonist of dozens of tourists.

"It's easier to feed the bear there. The black bear is very brave and not afraid of people. It will come up to the bear when it sees food."

But the scene in front of her made Xiao Yu a little worried: "There are many signs around Black Bear Mountain, which clearly state that tourists cannot feed animals without permission, but some tourists don't care at all and throw all kinds of food."

What impressed her most was a young couple. "They liked the black bear very much. I stood there for a few minutes and saw them feed the black bear half a box of biscuits and three pieces of bread, each of which was bigger than the meat buns we eat."

Maybe it tasted good, the black bear kept looking up. This made the couple laugh.

"I looked down and saw that there were still a lot of fruit shells and food packaging around the bear. There happened to be staff cleaning inside, which was also very hard." Xiao Yu was worried that the black bear, who "accepted everything", would suffer from indigestion?

The garbage bags thrown down by tourists

became the "delicacy" of monkeys

The most unexpected thing for Xiao Yu happened in Monkey Mountain. When he came to Monkey Mountain, the monkeys were strolling leisurely, and there were big monkeys carrying small monkeys on their backs. The scene looked particularly warm.

Just then, a discordant scene happened.

"There was a male tourist from another place, holding a little girl of five or six years old. The little girl was playing with a plastic bag in her hand, and while playing, she threw the plastic bag down." The tourist saw the child's behavior and did not dissuade him. Xiao Yu couldn't stand it and went forward to persuade him, but he only got a nonchalant answer from the other party: "What's the fuss? It's thrown down, do you want me to climb down and pick it up!"

The reason why Xiao Yu was so angry was that this was not the first tourist who threw plastic bags. In Monkey Mountain, you can see a lot of things that tourists threw down without permission.

"Throwing food may be because you like animals, but throwing plastic bags down, if animals eat them by mistake, it will be a big deal."

What Xiao Yu didn't expect was that when she was persuading tourists of uncivilized behavior, a monkey picked up a white plastic bag and ate it with relish. "In just a few seconds, it tore the bag into pieces with its mouth, ate it bit by bit, and ate most of it."

Xiao Yu was shocked and quickly called the consulting service hotline on the sign next to it, and told the staff on duty about the monkey eating the plastic bag by mistake. "The person who answered the phone said he would come to check the situation."

Popcorn, biscuits and other sweets

Animals will have stomach problems

Yesterday afternoon, the reporter contacted the staff on duty at the Hangzhou Zoo office.

It is understood that although it is the Spring Festival, in order to ensure the living and eating of the animals, the staff of various venues in the park are working normally. "Each venue has keepers, security guards and other staff to ensure the normal diet and activities of the animals. Each venue has a science sign that clearly states the habits of the animals and reminds tourists not to feed them food." The staff said that it is understandable that tourists love animals and want to share their food with them. "We also hope that tourists can understand that each animal has its own characteristics and habits, and the food that humans like to eat is not suitable for other animals. The staff will provide food for the animals regularly and quantitatively every day to ensure that the animals can grow healthily. I hope that tourists can watch in a civilized manner. Please do not feed or throw foreign objects without permission." In addition, the staff said that if they see tourists feeding without permission, the staff will promptly dissuade them. For safety reasons, the staff will clean the animal residence regularly every day. Usually, once there are items such as beverage bottles that may affect the safety of animals, the staff will also use bamboo poles to clean them up in time. The situation of tourists feeding animals without permission is not only seen in Hangzhou Zoo. The reporter learned from Hangzhou Wildlife World that some tourists who enter the park will bring food specifically to feed the animals. "We have two security checks, one before ticket checking and one during ticket checking. If security guards find tourists carrying food, they will persuade tourists to keep the food temporarily and take it back when leaving. Most tourists cooperate with our work."

The food brought by tourists is mostly cabbage, radish, strawberry, banana, etc. The most common places for feeding are places where primates who interact more with humans live, such as Baboon Island. "Animals in the park have also suffered from diarrhea and indigestion because tourists fed them sweets such as popcorn and biscuits. These foods will have an impact on animals." The staff also hopes to appeal through this newspaper that loving animals is a good thing, but please do not feed them food without permission, so that everyone can work together to create a healthy living environment for our animal friends.
