Shenzhen Customs seized more than 100,000 tons of smuggled "foreign garbage" in 2018

Xinhua News Agency, Shenzhen, February 13 (Reporter Wang Xiaodan, Wang Feng) Reporter learned from Shenzhen Customs that in 2018, the customs carried out 5 rounds of special operations to crack down on "foreign garbage", and detected 27 smuggling crimes of "foreign garbage", an increase of 1.5 times; 101,000 tons of smuggled solid waste were verified; 870 batches of solid waste, totaling 277,000 tons, were found to be unqualified for quarantine inspection.

Industrial waste such as waste plastics and hardware is the most common type of "foreign garbage" smuggled into Shenzhen port.

In May 2018, Shenzhen Customs investigated and punished a smuggled waste plastic processing plant in Shantou, Guangdong. The factory was full of waste plastics, and two production lines were working day and night to process and produce plastic bags and plastic lunch boxes used in People's Daily life. The air was filled with pungent smells. Plastic bags piled up on both sides of the nearby road, and the brown-green river was floating with a variety of plastic products, emitting a foul smell.

It is understood that since January 1, 2019, Shenzhen Customs has only retained the Shekou port to carry out solid waste supervision business. The Customs will continue to maintain a high pressure situation against smuggling, focus on collecting information on illegal activities such as smuggling and reselling license certificates through Hong Kong's "transshipment" and "LFC", and increase the proportion of monitoring and control of imported solid waste and suspected "shadow commodities".
