South Korean industrial giant launches PET recycling project

Hyosung Group, a South Korean industrial conglomerate, has launched a new project to improve the recycling rate of PET.

The project, called "Restoration to be Reborn," is an eco-Friend resource recycling project that aims to boost Jeju Island's resource recycling system and increase the use of recyclable items across South Korea. Hyosung Group Chairman Cho Hyun-joon is in charge of the project. Hyosung Group has signed business agreements with South Korea's Ministry of Environment, Jeju Special Autonomous Province, Jeju Provincial Development Authority and Pleasts Mama. Under the agreement, the Jeju Development Authority will collect PET bottles of discarded mineral water Samdasoo and recycle them on Jeju Island. Hyosung TNC will use the recycled PET bottles to make polyester chips and recycled fibers, which will eventually be used in the manufacture of eco-friendly bags.

Last year, Hyosung teamed up with Pleasts Mama, an eco-friendly fashion startup, to develop new design backpacks using recycled fibers.

Since no cutting and stitching is required, pleated sacks woven using the knitting method create no fabric waste or scraps. Pleasts Mama will introduce its new bags made from recycled Jeju fibers at this year's Environment Day event on June 5.
