The World Economic Forum released its annual Top 10 emerging Technologies list on Tuesday, showcasing the emerging technologies most promising to improve the state of the world.

Experts use a series of criteria to determine which technologies are selected. In addition to having significant social and economic potential benefits, the technologies must be disruptive, attractive to investors and researchers, and expected to reach a significant scale within the next five years, the forum said.

"The emerging technologies of today will shape the world of tomorrow and beyond, with broad economic and social implications. We must now discuss how to ensure that these innovations serve humanity and enable it to flourish." Mariette Dicristina, editor in chief of Scientific American and chair of the Emerging Technologies Steering Committee.

The top 10 emerging technologies for 2019 are: recyclable bioplastics, social robots, metal lenses, disordered proteins that target drugs, collaborative telepresence, smarter fertilizers, advanced food tracking and packaging technologies, safer nuclear reactors, DNA data storage, and utility-scale renewable energy storage.

"From income inequality to climate change, technology will play a key role in finding solutions to all the challenges in today's world. This year's emerging technologies demonstrate the rapid pace of innovation and give us a glimpse of what a sustainable, inclusive future could look like." Said Ruijie Jiang, chief technology officer of the World Economic Forum.
