The barrel is an important part of the extruder in the extrusion and compression molding system, just like the screw. When the screw rotates and pushes the plastic forward in the barrel, the heat is transferred from the outside of the barrel to the plastic in the barrel, and the thread volume on the screw gradually decreases, so that the plastic in the thread groove is subjected to the action of various forces such as extrusion, flipping and shearing, and is evenly mixed and plasticized. As it moves to the front of the barrel, it gradually melts and becomes a viscous flow state, completing the plasticization of the plastic. The normal cooperation between the barrel and the screw ensures the continuous extrusion of the raw materials.
The structure of the barrel is relatively simple. In large extruders, the barrel structure can be composed of several sections. Since the barrel is divided into several sections, the length of each section is reduced, which makes it convenient to machine the barrel. However, for this kind of barrel composed of several sections, it is difficult to achieve consistency in the inner diameter size after machining and the concentricity accuracy of the inner holes of the several sections of the barrel; in addition, the segmented barrel is connected with a flange, which will also bring some difficulties to the arrangement of the heating and cooling equipment of the barrel, and the temperature control will not be too uniform. In order to save more expensive alloy steel, some large extruder barrels use the method of adding a bushing to the inner hole or casting a wear-resistant alloy layer. Such a barrel outer shell can be cast from ordinary steel to achieve the purpose of reducing the manufacturing cost of the barrel.
