19-year-old girl paralyzed in bed for 4 years, single adoptive father takes care of her

A few days ago, when we arrived at a hillside in Xiangshui Village, Shihao Town, two hours away from Qijiang City, in a room of a wooden building, 19-year-old Liao Zhengxian was lying on the bed covered with black cotton wool, staring at the TV three meters away from her... The stench of feces and urine in the room had made Liao Zhengxian's adoptive father Liao Zongmin numb. He tore open the plastic packaging of toilet paper and put the whole roll of paper under his daughter. Under the table where the TV was placed, the plastic packaging of toilet paper had filled up a whole cardboard box.

God's "gift"

Speaking of his adopted daughter, Liao Zongmin didn't say much, "I won many awards when I was studying." After saying this, he sat on a stool, took the cigarette handed by the neighbor, lit it and smoked hard without saying a word. We learned from the neighbors that Liao Zongmin's economic conditions were not good, his mother was old, and he had a mentally ill brother. He had been single since then after dating several people in his early years.

In August 1994, a family in the village picked up a little girl who was only two months old outside the door. Liao Zongmin's 70-year-old mother thought that her 43-year-old single son would be alone in the future, so she took the little girl home and raised her as a granddaughter, naming her Liao Zhengxian.

After having this child, Liao Zongmin also began to learn to be a father. He squeezed out living expenses to buy milk powder for the child. Hearing his daughter call "Dad"...he would always save a piece of meat to supplement his daughter's nutrition.

Knowing that he was a child picked up, Liao Zhengxian cherished this difficult life. She studied hard. Whether in the village primary school or in the Bandung Central School, her grades were very good, and she ranked first in the class in many exams.

Liao Zongmin said that when he saw his daughter studying so hard, he seemed to see hope, "I thought, she is good at studying, and I have to support her studies even if I have no money." In Liao Zongmin's view, his daughter would naturally work in the city if she studied well, and then he could follow his daughter into the city to enjoy a peaceful life.

But the heavens seemed to have played a joke on him.

When Liao Zhengxian was in the fourth grade of primary school, Liao Zongmin found that her walking was a little abnormal. She always walked with her legs crossed and her speed was far behind other students. In order to prevent her slow walking from affecting her studies, Liao Zongmin insisted on carrying her daughter to the Wanlong Central School a few kilometers away from home every Monday morning. On weekends, he rushed over to carry his daughter back.

The doctor's "verdict"

This carrying lasted for several years. In 2009, Liao Zhengxian, who had just finished the first grade of junior high school, had a harder time walking. When she was studying, she even had to rely on her classmates to carry her to the toilet.

Seeing that he could no longer help his daughter, Liao Zongmin applied for her to take a leave of absence from school, hoping that she would rest at home for a while before seeing a doctor. In the second half of 2009, Liao Zongmin scraped together a sum of money and took his daughter to the main city of Chongqing for medical treatment. In his opinion, as long as he went to the hospital, the doctor would be able to cure his daughter's illness.

"The doctor said this is the sequelae of polio, the treatment costs more than 100,000 yuan, and it may not be cured." Liao Zongmin's hope was shattered again.

In 2010, Liao Zongmin's old mother died of illness, and his daughter Liao Zhengxian had to take care of her alone. Just when Liao Zongmin felt more and more powerless, in 2011, Liao Zhengxian's condition worsened. She could not sit down even though she could be carried outside by Liao Zongmin to sit and bask in the sun. She completely lost her mobility below the waist and could only lie in bed every day, and could only urinate and defecate in bed.

Liao Zongmin was so helpless: he originally hoped that his daughter would take care of him in his old age, but he didn't expect that he would have to take care of his daughter's excrement and urine after he was fifty.

The "trouble" of mobile phones

Although his temper has always been bad, Liao Zongmin is very patient and careful in taking care of his daughter. The village spent several thousand yuan to help him buy a wooden house. The house was a one-room house, so Liao Zongmin used colorful striped plastic sheets to separate his bed from his daughter's. He said that he was old and hard of hearing, and he could hear his daughter's voice at any time when he slept next door.

Every day before dawn, he got up to make breakfast for his daughter, watched her finish eating, and then applied medicine to her legs that had bedsores due to long-term bed rest, and prepared the water she needed to drink for the day by the bed, and then went to work alone. After finishing the work, he hurried back to clean up his daughter's urine and feces, and then cooked and applied medicine for his daughter. At night, he would often check whether his daughter's quilt was covered properly.

In order to make his daughter not lonely and boring, Liao Zongmin also gritted his teeth and squeezed out more than 300 yuan to buy his daughter a mobile phone, "so that she can play games and surf the Internet."

It was also this mobile phone that made Liao Zongmin's originally tight life even more stretched. "It costs more than 100 yuan a month for a megabyte (mobile phone traffic). The government gives me a minimum living allowance of more than 600 yuan a month, and I have to buy her medicine." Occasionally, Liao Zongmin would be a little troubled, but he would still think of buying his daughter's favorite instant noodles and braised meat on market days.

Daughter's "despair"

Although the adoptive father tried his best to meet his wishes, Liao Zhengxian, who had been ill for a long time, felt that he was a burden to his father. Sometimes because of physical pain, he would deliberately get angry at Liao Zongmin. "She asked me to carry her to the road to be hit by a car, or asked me to buy dichlorvos, saying that I would feel relieved if she died after drinking it." Liao Zongmin said.

For these, Liao Zongmin said that since he had raised her so big, he would never ignore her. "She was very diligent when she was a child. She helped me cut grass for pigs when she was eight or nine years old. She was also very particular. She only wore school uniforms when she went to school and changed them immediately when she got home." Liao Zongmin said that although it was becoming more and more difficult for him to take care of his daughter, he would feel better when he thought of his daughter's goodness in the past.

"Dad, you will feel better only when I die. You have never enjoyed your daughter's blessing. Only when I die can you enjoy it." After hearing his daughter's words, Liao Zongmin wiped away the tears from his eyes with the blue cloth sleeves that had been washed white.
