A developing disaster! Report: Plastic is killing marine life

China news network November 20, according to foreign media reports, local time 19, ocean conservation organization (Oceana) released a report, for the first time with data detailing the impact of plastics on Marine mammals and sea turtles in the United States. The report pointed out that since 2009, nearly 1,800 Marine mammals and sea turtles have been found along the U.S. coastline, unfortunately swallowing plastic by mistake or being entangled in plastic.

The group's report attempts to describe the cumulative impact of plastic pollution on Marine animals in the United States over the past decade, even as the country has implemented more recycling programs.

Researchers surveyed dozens of government agencies, organizations and others to collect data covering 40 different species, according to the report. The number of animals surveyed is far lower than the actual numbers affected by the flow of plastic into the ocean, which Oceana described as "a disaster in the making."

The researchers found that Marine animals were most likely to mistakenly swallow fishing line, plastic sheets, bags, balloons and food packaging, while packing ropes, plastic bags and balloons were the main culprits for entangling Marine animals.

"While there may never be a complete picture of the fate of all plastic-affected Marine animals, this report paints a dire picture," said Oceana senior scientist Dr Kimberly Warner.

He noted that "the world cannot live without plastic, as industry continues to find more and more ways to force this persistent pollutant into our daily lives, while it is strangling, drowning Marine life."

The group is calling on governments to pass policies to ensure that companies stop producing unnecessary plastics.
