Danone collaborates with Amco to design new yogurt bottle

As the Latin American yogurt market continues to grow, some companies are developing products to appeal to health-conscious consumers. For Danone (Paris), this includes developing attractive, premium, durable and increasingly sustainable packaging.

The all-natural yoghurt Danone sells in Argentina, which currently comes in a 200 ml clear PET bottle with a larger mouth, was developed in partnership with global packaging company Amcor (based in Melbourne, Australia). The bottle has a lid made of aluminium and PET in a clear polypropylene of more than 65mm.

"PET wide-mouth bottles are a completely new form of packaging suitable for cold filling dairy products, "says Martin Darmandrail, Director of New business Development at Amco Argentina." In a market traditionally dominated by thermoplastic PP and PS containers, We have changed everything with a yoghurt packaging that offers the durability, freshness, performance, manufacturing and sustainability benefits of PET."

The new PET bottle comes with a carved, fine base and packaging label for packaging Danone's La Serenisima Original yogurt, in keeping with its 100 percent natural positioning. To protect the yogurt inside the bottle, the surface of the bottle is 55mm thick and coated with an aluminum-PET-foil barrier seal and UV blocking agent, the company said.

Consumers are increasingly eager to see the product before they buy it, and the transparent packaging allows them to see the fresh yogurt inside. R&, Danone's Argentine arm; Maximiliano Sassone, I director, says :" We developed La Serenisima Original, inspired by the first yoghurt produced by La Serenisima 55 years ago, which revolutionised the category in 1963. We carefully selected ingredients, including milk from a family farm in Argentina, and respected every step of the original processing to create a 100% natural product that is free of preservatives, so that our consumers can associate with their memories of the original product."

According to Darmandrail, Amco optimized the two-step reheat process to produce wide-mouth bottles using a matrix blow molding machine, the industry's first wide-mouth bottle for high-volume yogurt containers.

In Argentina, Danone launched La Serenisima Original yogurt in six flavors and will expand the commercialization of the product to the rest of Latin America. Danone has already installed a Stork filling line and plans to produce 40 million to 50 million bottles of such yogurts a year.
