Indonesia sends 49 boxes of garbage back to Europe and the United States, vowing not to be a garbage dump

Beijing, July 3, according to Singapore Lianhe Zaobao network reported that the Indonesian government said on the 2nd that they will return 49 containers full of garbage to France and other developed countries.

According to customs officials in Batam, Indonesia, the 49 containers were filled with garbage, plastic and dangerous goods, in violation of import regulations. Among them, 38 containers contained toxic or hazardous materials and 11 containers contained ordinary waste that could not be recycled.

"We are coordinating with the importer to return the containers immediately," said customs spokesman Sumar. He pointed out that the waste came from the United States, Australia, France and Germany, among others.

In May, Indonesia had shipped five containers full of trash back to the United States, vowing not to let Indonesia become a dumping ground.

An increasing number of Southeast Asian countries are reportedly set to become dumping grounds for international waste. In May, Malaysia announced it was returning hundreds of tons of plastic waste. On June 29, a shipment of plastic that had been stranded in the Philippines for five to six years and had caused a diplomatic dispute between the Philippines and Canada was returned to the Greater Vancouver area on Canada's west coast.
