Rio Olympics: Chinese elements highlight craftsmanship

(Zhou Wuying) The 31st Summer Olympic Games is being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Chinese athletes are fighting hard in Rio, and "Chinese elements" are also shining in Rio.

The total budget of the Rio Olympics is nearly 20 billion US dollars, which has become a big cake pursued by Chinese manufacturing, Chinese "smart manufacturing" and Chinese services.

Made in China

Inside and outside the stadiums of this Rio Olympics, Chinese manufacturing can be seen everywhere. From small household mosquito nets and Olympic mascots to large equipment and clothing, all of them have shortened the distance between Chinese manufacturing and Brazil, a South American country, and even the global Olympics.

The lovely Olympic mascot "Vinicius" of this Olympics is produced in China. Vinicius is the name of a main player in the bossa nova music movement in Brazil in the 1960s and 1970s. The mascot was designed by a Brazilian artist, and the manufacturing task was completed by Beijing Huajiang Cultural Development Co., Ltd., founded by Wenzhou businessman Chen Shaoshu from China. From Beijing, London to Rio, Huajiang has become the only company in the world to have obtained the license rights for three consecutive Summer Olympics.

In just four months, 2.5 million mascots with complex production processes were put on the market, winning praise from the Olympic Committee. Moreover, the production of the mascots this time also has a certain degree of technological content. In order to allow the mascot to stand, the maker installed a special steel wire under the soles of the feet and then wrapped it with cotton. In this way, the mascot can not only stand, but also bend its arms and legs to varying degrees. Among them, 270,000 mascot dolls will be sold. The price of a 30-centimeter mascot doll is about 100 reais (about 205 yuan), and the price of a 45-centimeter doll is about 150 reais (about 307.5 yuan).

At the opening ceremony, a round of fireworks shot straight into the sky, illuminating the night sky of Maracan?. And 80% of these beautiful fireworks come from Liuyang, Hunan.

The national flags of various countries hoisted in the venue were also made by a Chinese home textile industrial company.

During the event, the logo of the Chinese clothing brand 361° silently reminded everyone of China's existence. In October 2014, the sportswear brand 361° officially became the official supplier of the Rio Olympics. Olympic officials, volunteers and logistics personnel wearing 361° uniforms can be seen everywhere. Although the colors and styles of the clothes are different, the Chinese characteristics are extremely distinct. It is estimated that 361° will provide more than 106,500 uniforms.

The Olympics is also a competition venue for many sports equipment manufacturers around the world. At the Rio Olympics, Taishan Sports became the Olympic equipment supplier for the fourth time. Bian Zhiliang, chairman of Taishan Sports Group, said that Taishan Sports provided nearly 10,000 products for the Rio Olympics and Paralympics, covering 11 major events such as judo, taekwondo, wrestling, track and field, and cycling.

Although China is a major bicycle country, it is not outstanding in bicycle production, especially in the most critical production materials of bicycles, which have long relied on imports. Taishan Group hired experts from outside China to spend five years on research, and finally developed materials that exceeded the internationally accepted carbon fiber standards.

"Taishan's products are very good, both in terms of technology and price, which is why we will cooperate with Taishan Group. We still hope to continue this cooperation at the 2020 Winter Olympics," said Marius Wieser, President of the International Judo Federation.

At the Rio Olympics, DHS was once again selected as the Olympic equipment for table tennis and badminton.

Hebei Botou Zhangkong Barbell Company, which broke the history of Japanese companies monopolizing the supply of barbells for six Olympic Games at the Beijing Olympics, is the only supplier of weightlifting equipment for the Rio Olympics. Since weightlifting competitions require the use of five colors of barbell plates, in order to overcome the problem of color difference, the dimming experiment for each color takes more than 10 days. In the production of barbells, Zhangkong barbells incorporate many innovative elements. Through the use of feedback, the comfort of barbells is enhanced and the probability of injury to athletes is reduced.

Volleyball net posts, referee chairs and other equipment produced by Jinling Sports also appear in volleyball games. In 2013, Jinling Sports signed an official partnership with the International Volleyball Federation, breaking the decades-long equipment monopoly of the Japanese brand Senoh. In addition, Jinling Sports is also striving to enter the Olympic arena in basketball, track and field, handball and other projects.

There are 56 "Invincible" brand rowing boats manufactured by Zhejiang Huaying Holding Group Co., Ltd. in the Olympic rowing arena. As the only official designated rowing boat for the Rio Olympic rowing project, it is used by rowing teams from various countries.

Leyard and Unilumin Technology have both participated in the supply of display products related to the Rio Olympics. Among them, Leyard provided LED display products for the Olympics to NBC TV in the United States. It is understood that NBC Olympic Channel will choose Leyard's small-pitch high-definition LED display screen for the series of news display and communication reports of the Rio Olympics.

Vanhe Electric indirectly became the supplier of gas water heaters for the Olympic Games. The company said on the interactive platform that its overseas customer, Brazil's KOMECO, is a sponsor of the Rio Olympic Games and has obtained the qualification of an official designated supplier. All the gas water heaters supplied by this customer for the Olympic Games are manufactured by Vanhe Electric.

It is worth mentioning that behind the construction of facilities such as the Olympic Village and the main Olympic stadium area, Chinese machinery is indispensable. Previously, on the construction site of the main Olympic stadium area, the logos of Chinese companies such as Sany Heavy Industry, Xugong and Zoomlion could be seen everywhere. Today, Chinese brand cranes such as Sany Group, Xugong Group and Liugong Group account for more than 80% of the local market share. Among them, Sany cranes have a local market share of 37%, ranking first for three consecutive years.

Engineering machinery and equipment from China have participated in almost all Olympic engineering construction projects, including the construction of Olympic venues. Among them, Sany Heavy Industry's lifting machinery, excavators, road machinery and other products have become the main force, and have been widely involved in the construction of key projects such as the Rio Olympic Village, Olympic Park, Maracan? Stadium renovation, and Metro Line 4. Baja Olympic Park is the heart of the Rio Olympics. The Olympic Park includes seven new venues and two existing venues. Sany rollers, excavators, cranes, concrete machinery and other equipment participated in the construction. Sany also transferred in a new 80-ton four-axle steering truck crane to meet the needs of the construction party with more flexible mobility. Maracan? Stadium is the main venue of the Brazilian Olympic Games. The construction requirements of this venue are extremely strict, and concrete needs to be pumped for 12 hours continuously. Sany excavators, rollers, truck cranes and pumping equipment work together to help the construction of the venue. Metro Line 4 is the largest infrastructure project in Rio Olympics, and Sany's cranes and excavators bear the heavy responsibility. The construction party of Metro Line 4 gave a very high evaluation of Sany equipment.

Among the construction machinery used in the construction of Rio Olympic venues, the number of products provided by XCMG accounts for more than half, especially cranes and concrete equipment account for 80%. According to reports, more than 1,000 earth-moving machines of XCMG Group participated in the construction of venues for this Olympic Games, more than 300 road rollers were used in the construction of ancillary facilities of the venues, more than 500 cranes were used for building hoisting construction, and more than 200 aerial platform work vehicles were used for interior decoration hoisting construction. A total of more than 2,000 XCMG brand construction machinery were used on the entire Olympic construction site.

China's "Smart Manufacturing"

Ordinary Chinese-made products quietly injected Chinese elements into Rio, while Chinese "smart manufacturing" containing high-tech elements also showed the world that Chinese manufacturing keeps pace with the times and that the gap between China and the world's advanced level is narrowing.

Most of the audience will take public transportation to the Rio Olympic venues. Chinese-made subway trains and electric locomotives are responsible for the passenger transportation of this Olympic Games. This is the first time that Chinese rail transit equipment has served an Olympic Games abroad.

From August 1, Metro Line 4, the largest infrastructure project of the Rio Olympics, officially started passenger operation. The trains running on this subway line are produced by a Chinese rail vehicle company. This train is called the "Olympic subway". The Rio Municipal Government and CNR Changke Co., Ltd. signed an order for 15 "Olympic subway" trains (90 vehicles) for Line 4. During the Olympics, this subway will transport about 300,000 passengers every day, reducing the number of cars on the road by 2,000 per day during peak hours, shortening the travel time from Rio city to the core area of the Olympics by about half an hour. In order to meet the requirements of Brazilian customers, the company has previously installed special designs such as super air conditioning. The car body is made of stainless steel, which can effectively withstand humid environments. To strengthen security monitoring, cameras are installed in all carriages.

These Chinese trains have long been present on Rio's Metro Lines 1 and 2. Rodrigo, director of the Rio State Department of Transportation, previously said that they are very satisfied with the quality and design of the Chinese-made trains, and the Rio State Government plans to purchase more Chinese trains in the future.

In the beautiful Guanabara Bay, the "Breadfruit Mountain" ferry made in China has provided convenience for the Brazilian people's travel. It not only shortened the voyage time by about 30%, but also greatly improved the riding conditions, providing real convenience for residents' travel. This is the first of the seven ferries ordered by the Rio State Government.

The security issues of large-scale sports events have always attracted much attention. In this Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, 90% of the security scanning equipment came from China's Nuctech. Zhejiang Dahua also provided video surveillance products for Olympic security work, and its advanced technologies such as face recognition provided information support for Olympic security services.

In this Olympic security equipment bidding, Nuctech won three of the four bids and provided more than 200 x-ray scanning equipment for hand luggage and large cargo for the Olympic Games. Nuctech's security inspection equipment is used in all four major competition areas of the Rio Olympics. Among them, 145 equipment in the Maracan? competition area and 55 equipment in the Deodoro competition area are all provided by Nuctech. The Baja and Copacabana competition areas will also partially use Chinese equipment. In addition, some equipment will also be used in this Paralympic Games. This is the third time that Nuctech has provided security inspection services for a large-scale event held in Brazil, following the 2007 Pan American Games and the 2014 Brazil World Cup. "Nuctech's security inspection equipment works very well and has not had any malfunctions so far. The machine has a high resolution, the image quality of the display is also very good, and it is very easy to operate." said the Brazilian Ministry of Justice official in charge of security inspection.

Dahua Technology's Brazilian subsidiary won the competition with strong competitors such as Japan's Panasonic, Canada's Avigilon, and South Korea's Samsung. The Olympic security equipment that won the bid this time accounted for more than 80% of the total number of Olympic projects. A total of 373 IP network high-definition spherical cameras that can rotate 360 degrees and 1,450 IP network high-definition small hemispherical cameras were provided, which were distributed in various locations in the four major competition areas, and can effectively assist on-site security personnel in monitoring the competition areas. The cameras provided by Dahua for the Rio Olympics have functions such as infrared night vision and intelligent analysis, and can identify objects that suddenly appear or disappear within the monitoring range. When there are phenomena such as people moving quickly or motor vehicles going in the opposite direction, the system will automatically alarm. Some cameras also support face recognition. Security personnel can use them to capture specific faces in the captured images and realize pre-control of suspects.

Gree air conditioners caught the Olympic "express train" at the last minute. On July 13, the Rio Olympic Organizing Committee announced at the headquarters building that Gree Electric Appliances Co., Ltd. became the official supplier of the Olympics. Gree Electric Appliances (Brazil) Co., Ltd. said that Gree created the "three onlys" of Chinese air conditioner brands in Rio Olympic Games: "the only Chinese-made product to enter the Olympic Games with 100% independent brand, the only brand whose products cover competition venues, Olympic Village, Media Village, supporting hotels and airports, and the only brand whose household air conditioners and central air conditioners are stationed in Olympic-related projects." These air conditioners have a "Chinese style" in Rio Olympic Games. Nearly 100% of the central air conditioners in the Olympic venues in Brazil are made in China. According to Xinhua News Agency, Gree won the bid for 15 venues.

At the same time, Midea Air Conditioning also provided air conditioning services for dozens of Olympic venues together with another foreign-funded enterprise "Carrier", of which more than 30% were Midea's independent brands. As an air conditioner manufacturer, Chigo also produced 20,000 split air conditioners for Rio Olympic Village.

In the Olympic venues, the tableware used by people comes from a high-tech company in Wuhan, which uses renewable raw materials such as straw, bamboo powder and plant starch to make biodegradable bioplastic products. This time, more than 2 million sets of bioplastic tableware produced by the company have become the designated supplies for the Rio Olympics.

"Made in China" has actually played an important role in Brazil for a long time. At the end of last year, the Zika virus spread in Brazil. Within just three days of receiving the demand from the overseas market, BGI, a subsidiary of Tsinghua Holdings, quickly developed a 30-minute rapid constant temperature amplification detection reagent for Zika virus, which realized the rapid detection of Zika virus in the form of a microfluidic chip.

Chinese Service

In addition to various products made in China, Chinese elements also shine in other aspects of the Rio Olympics in serving the Olympic Games.

Chinese companies are active in invisible communications and power supply guarantees.

Just three kilometers away from the Maracan? Stadium, State Grid Brazil is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the main power supply channel for Rio de Janeiro and the football sub-venue Brasilia. The consortium formed by State Grid Corporation of China and Brazilian Electricity Company won the bid for the transmission project of the Belo Monte Hydropower Station last year, allowing China's ultra-high voltage transmission technology to go abroad for the first time. The mainstream media in Brazil commented that this project benefits the Brazilian people and also makes Brazil's power transmission technology stand at the forefront of world energy technology.

The communication guarantee during the Olympic Games depends on the Huawei team. After years of hard work by Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE, the networks of major telecommunications companies have been able to cover China. The construction of these communication networks is all the responsibility of Chinese companies. Huawei has deployed more than 70,000 sites throughout Brazil so far, and its communication services are spread across Brazil and China, and its share of the Brazilian network equipment market is as high as more than 40%.

Because Brazil lacks its own perfect service system, some brands of domestic cars can be seen on the roadside in Rio.

In order to ensure the Rio Olympics, China sent subway maintenance workers to Brazil. Locomotive maintenance workers from Changchun have to patrol back and forth on Line 4 every day to prevent train failures so that they can be handled in time. For this Olympic Games, CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd. transferred 46 train after-sales maintenance engineers from Changchun, which is less than 78 in 2014. This is because the cooperation with Brazilian staff is becoming more and more proficient.

The success of every Olympic Games is inseparable from the great assistance of enterprises in various fields. The sponsorship levels of the Olympic Games are divided into Olympic partners, sponsors and suppliers from high to low. When you step into the office building of the Rio Olympic Organizing Committee, you can find the logos of two Chinese companies, 361° and Gree, among the suppliers. In addition to the official clothing of the Olympic Games, Chinese clothing brands have also sponsored many Olympic delegations. According to Cao Yuan, the head of Double-edged Sword Public Relations Company, under their promotion, 361° also sponsored the Greek Olympic Committee and the South African Olympic Committee; Hongxing Erke sponsored the Croatian delegation, and China Jordan sponsored the Uzbek delegation.

The traditional Chinese cupping is also chosen by athletes from many countries as a means of recovery from training and competition.

In addition, three Chinese online media have also obtained the new media copyrights of this Olympic Games, namely Tencent Sports, Ali Sports and Ouxun Sports. Among them, Tencent Sports took the lead in obtaining the online broadcasting rights of the Rio Olympic Games.

Double-edged Sword Sports, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Contemporary Mingcheng, obtained the marketing representation rights of the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee for US$1.6 million as early as 2014. In addition, Double-edged Sword also obtained the priority purchase rights for tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Rio Olympics.
