Wuhan gradually resumes garbage sorting, green recycling can be booked on WeChat for door-to-door service
Staff members came to citizens' homes to recycle paper and plastic products
As the epidemic prevention and control situation improves, Wuhan will gradually resume garbage sorting. On May 4, Wuhan first launched centralized recycling services in more than 30 communities across the city.
Daddy's pile of foam was exchanged for 2.8 yuan
There are more than 4,700 households in Fenghua Wei'an Community in Wuhan Economic Development Zone. Kitchen waste bins and other garbage bins are placed around each door, and residents will put the classified garbage separately.
In two more spacious places in the community, smart recycling bins are placed. There are plastic, metal, paper, textile and hazardous waste delivery ports on the box, so that residents can scan the QR code for classified delivery.
In order to check whether the residents' classification is accurate, Wan Zilong, a staff member of Wuhan Huali Company who is responsible for the garbage sorting in the community, opened the paper delivery port and found that an oil pot was mistakenly thrown in, so he transferred it to the plastic delivery port.
Around 9:30, Huali Company set up a stall and purchased recyclables at a clear price. The recycling price for paper products is 0.8 yuan per kilogram, 1.1 yuan per kilogram for plastics, and 2 yuan per kilogram for metals.
Ms. Zhou, a resident of Building 7 of the community, took her A4 printing paper, 2 cans, and 2 beverage bottles to the recycling site. The weighing showed that the printing paper weighed 1.75 kilograms and the recycling price was 1.4 yuan. The staff immediately transferred the money to her via WeChat. Ms. Zhou brought a small number of cans and beverage bottles, and the staff suggested that she exchange them for daily necessities. She chose 30 garbage bags.
Daddy Wang bought a TV and a gas stove last month. The packaging material was foam. "If you throw it away casually, it doesn't meet the requirements of garbage classification, and it takes up a lot of space at home." He took the foam to the recycling site and weighed it to 2.5 kilograms. The recycling staff gave him 2.8 yuan in cash according to the plastic price.
"Although the money is not much, it is worthwhile to participate in garbage sorting and improve the family environment." said Uncle Wang.
Pregnant women use WeChat to make an appointment for door-to-door recycling
Residents who like online shopping often have recyclable items such as cartons, foam, plastic, and metal accumulated at home, hoping that someone will come to recycle them. Some residents also hope that someone will come to recycle their old TVs and refrigerators after replacing them. Now, their wishes can be realized.
Ms. Zhou, who lives in Building 23 of Fenghua Wei'an Community, is a pregnant woman and has a lot of paper and plastic products stored at home. "I made an appointment with Wuhan Huali Company for door-to-door recycling yesterday through the WeChat platform, and they came to my door today. It's really convenient." After weighing, the staff paid 23.2 yuan on the spot.
In the second phase of Rongke Tiancheng in Jiang'an District and the southern area of Yikanyuan in Baibuting, the recycling staff of the garbage sorting and supply and marketing cooperatives also went to the residents' door on May 4 to recycle.
Ms. Wan, a resident of Rongke Tiancheng Phase II, brought 20 kilograms of waste paper such as old packaging boxes and more than 70 beverage bottles, earning a total of 230 points, which can be exchanged for a 3-kilogram bottle of laundry detergent worth 200 points. With the remaining points from before, there are still 180 points left.
Grandma Guo, who lives in the southern area of Yikangyuan, usually accumulates a total of 30 kilograms of plastic and paper products. Considering the old man's age, the staff went to the door to buy them. Nearly 300 points were redeemed for the old man. "I can exchange these points for rice, flour, oil and other daily necessities." Grandma Guo said.
On the same day, the staff came to the two communities in Jiang'an and collected a total of 1,058 kilograms of recyclables from more than 100 residents, mostly paper and plastic.
There are 4 ways to recycle recyclable garbage
Wuhan has full coverage of garbage classification, and this year is the decisive year.
He Wei, head of the Wuhan Municipal Garbage Classification Task Force Office, said that at present, the classification of other garbage, kitchen waste and hazardous waste is progressing steadily. Recyclable garbage was affected by the epidemic. After the epidemic in Wuhan was brought under control, recycling was officially restarted on May 4. China's goal is to achieve a resource reuse rate of 35% for recyclables, and Wuhan has put pressure on itself to be 3 percentage points higher.
There are four recycling modes for recyclable garbage: fixed-point recycling in the community, door-to-door recycling, recycling in the community's smart recycling bins, and online appointment recycling.
In communities in Wuchang, Hongshan, Qiaokou, Jiangxia and other places, smart recycling bins are gradually becoming popular. Residents only need to scan the QR code to automatically weigh and accumulate points, and the points can be exchanged for daily necessities or even cash.
Sitting at home, tapping the mobile phone to place an order, someone will come to collect discarded home appliances, plastic bottles and other waste within 24 hours. On June 13, 2019, the Wuhan garbage classification and recycling platform was launched, and citizens can easily sell the classified garbage and get cash or points. However, mobile phone orders require recyclables of no less than 20 kilograms.
It is estimated that Wuhan's annual recyclables will reach 400,000 tons, in order to achieve the green environmental protection goals of source reduction and resource reuse.
