Agricultural film

  • Apr 01, 2025

Agricultural film, also known as film plastic, includes ground film (also called agricultural ground film), the main component of which is polyethylene. It is mainly used to cover farmland, which plays a role in increasing ground temperature, preserving soil moisture, promoting seed germination and rapid growth of seedlings, and inhibiting the growth of weeds.

Purchase method

See whether the product meets the national mandatory standards. The national mandatory standard thickness of agricultural film is 0.008 mm, but many of the agricultural films sold on the market are 0.004 mm agricultural films that do not meet the standards. After using unqualified agricultural films, not only can they not keep warm and moisturize, but they can easily cause "white pollution" in farmland.

Some dealers hype 0.008 mm agricultural films as "environmentally friendly agricultural films" to confuse farmers. In fact, 0.008 mm plastic agricultural films are only easier to recycle than 0.004 mm agricultural films, and the real environmentally friendly agricultural films refer to degradable biological agricultural films. This type of agricultural film has not been promoted due to problems such as high production costs.

Purchase agricultural films according to their uses. If you blindly buy it and use it as an ordinary agricultural film or do not use it according to the manufacturer's requirements, this will waste its functionality, so you should buy it with a purpose, and you should also carefully check the actual performance of its functional characteristics.

When buying agricultural films, you should understand the qualifications and reputation of the manufacturer and seller, and check the product quality inspection certificate and sales invoice.

Main classification

Due to the different absorption and reflection laws of various colored plastic agricultural films on the spectrum, they have different effects on the growth of crops, weeds, pests and ground temperature. For this reason, colored plastic agricultural films should be used reasonably. The following are the appropriate uses of various agricultural films:

Black film: for planting summer radishes, cabbages, spinach, autumn cucumbers, and late tomatoes in plots with serious weeds or in high temperature seasons.

Green film: mostly used for vegetables such as strawberries, beans, eggplants, sweet peppers, tomatoes, melons and other economic crops, and can remove weeds.

Blue film: Mainly suitable for rice seedling cultivation, which is conducive to the cultivation of short and strong seedlings. It can also be used for covering cultivation of spinach, cotton, peanuts, strawberries, etc.

Red film: Rice seedlings grown under red film grow vigorously, sugar content of beets increases, carrot taproots grow larger, leek leaves are wide and thick, harvest time is early and yield increases.

Purple film: Mainly suitable for the cultivation of eggplants and green leafy vegetables in greenhouses or plastic greenhouses in winter and spring, which can improve quality and yield.

Yellow film: Covering cucumbers with yellow film can promote budding and flowering and increase yield by 50%-100%. Covering celery and lettuce plants will delay bolting. Covering short lentils will increase internodes of plants and make beans grow strong. Covering tea trees will improve tea quality and increase yield.

Silver-gray film: Mainly suitable for the cultivation of vegetables, melons, cotton, and tobacco in summer and autumn, and has good disease prevention, aphid prevention, and whitefly prevention.

Storage method

Mulch film covering technology is widely used in rural areas. In order to improve economic benefits, farmers use mulch film twice a year or more than once a year. Here are five methods for collecting agricultural mulch film:

1. Dry bag storage method

Wash and fold the mulch film that has covered crops, put it into a plastic bag, tie the bag tightly, and place it in a moist and cool place. Keep it away from heat sources to prevent it from being exposed to sunlight and deteriorating. This method can generally be stored for 2 years.

2. Straw core roll storage method

Roll the washed and dried film into a cylinder, add straw as a core in the middle to facilitate ventilation. It is best to add some talcum powder when rolling the film to avoid adhesion, and then put the rolled film in a warehouse, etc., and move it less at ordinary times, and pay attention to preventing high temperature, high humidity and rodent damage.

3. Water storage method

Wash the covered mulch film and remove the dirt, then roll it into bundles or fold it neatly, put it in a tank or pool, put a heavy object on the mulch film, pour clean water to soak the mulch film, and then cover it to shade it. During storage, the pool or jar cannot be dehydrated. This method can be preserved for 5-6 years.

4. Soil storage method

Wash the covered mulch film and remove the dirt, fold it or roll it into bundles, pack it in plastic bags, dig an 80 cm deep pit, put the mulch film in it, and cover it with 30 cm thick soil. The preservation effect is the same as the water storage method.

5. Cellar storage method: Fold the washed mulch film with water droplets, put it in a plastic bag, tie the bag mouth with a thin rope, and put it in the cellar. This method is better than the dry bag storage method.

Industry status

1. The raw material market fluctuates greatly. Affected by many factors such as the release of new ethylene production capacity outside China, the recent decline in international oil prices and weak global demand, the price of polyethylene has been slowly declining recently. Among them, the market price of LLDPE, the main raw material for ground film, is only about 11,000 yuan/ton, down 10% year-on-year, with no obvious signs of rebound, which has hit dealers' confidence in the future of agricultural film and also shaken the confidence of agricultural film manufacturers.

Second, the decline in grain and cotton prices has dampened farmers' enthusiasm for using agricultural film. Since 2012, cotton prices have always hovered at a low level, corn spot prices have been stable and falling after the Spring Festival, and futures prices have fallen sharply recently. These have seriously dampened farmers' enthusiasm for planting corn and cotton, reduced demand for ground film, and caused the agricultural film market to shrink.

Third, overcapacity is very serious. At present, the effective production capacity of agricultural film in China exceeds 4.5 million tons, and the total demand is only 2.2 million tons/year, with overcapacity of more than 1 times. In this case, when the market is good, companies will unanimously increase the operating rate of their equipment, increase market supply, and suppress price declines; when demand shrinks, companies have no choice but to passively reduce the operating rate to minimize losses. This is also the root cause of the fact that agricultural film companies have not made much profit when the market is good, and have suffered greater losses when the market is bad.
